Nook & Sony ?

I'm wondering what format NOOK uses ? Does it have it's own format or can I download from Barnes&Knobles and read their books on my Sony ? Sorry if this is too basic a question for long term users, but I'm new at this, still trying to figure it out

Nook uses ePub, but it uses a version of DRM which is incompatible with your Sony. So while books from Sony (or any other seller of ePub's using Adobe's standard DRM) can be used on the Nook the reverse is not true.

The above is correct. However, you can convert from NOOK's format to a SONY-compatible one (epub) pretty easily by using Calibre - a free software that you can easily find if you just google it.

Good point!

Also, aren't Nook purchases only available in USA?

Technically not correct!

You have to add the relevent BN anti-drm plugins and since they deal with your credit card number, it is just asking for trouble.

And it is a HUGE pain in the butt to setup. I've done, just to see how it works. No fun. So I no longer buy ebooks from BN...

True, like many functions of Calibre, it requires additional plugins. I found out recently - I bought some books from BN because I could not find elsewhere.
Anyhow, it took 10 minutes to setup. But I was already familiar with Apprentice Alf, so that's cheating

The credit card thing... well, that is BN for you. I am not sure it makes me any more uneasy than any credit card purchase online. If you think you are safe... you are just wrong.

I was actually pretty upset about it as well. I also assumed that, since it was an epub, I would be able to read it on my SONY without converting. I think it's really a losing proposition, pushing your own proprietary format while NOT being the market leader. Amazon can afford it... I doubt BN can.

On the other side, in this story, I am pretty pissed at Amazon as well. Amazon.UK had the book I wanted. But I could not buy it from them, as I live in the US. It kept bouncing me off and telling me to use Amazon.com. Which didn't have the book. Sure, I could have jumped hoops around that one as well, but I figured it was easier to buy from BN. In retrospective, I should have just pirated the book

Yes, yes, just kidding...

Not sure how that's Amazon's fault? The book has to be made available for them to sell in a given region and that's not up to them (unless it was an Amazon publishing imprint).

VPN with UK ip address, UK userid and gift certificates would solve the problem... I use witopia and have a UK and a US account at BooksonBoard and Amazon and get around those georestrictions very nicely. Worth every penny especially considering I can use it for online TV too (Hulu)...

desja5-You may be kidding but more and more peeps are going that pirate route .. when you see an e-book and they want $20 for it or you hit crap like the above... you would think they would have learned some lessons from the music idiots.. but no...., the thing is that anybody with a cheap scanner and enough time can scan a book and the only real defense the publishers/vendors have is to make it cheap and easy enough that it's not worthwhile to do it .... but will they listen ??? I hope they do but I an not encouraged by what I see to date.....

Who said anything about pirating books???????
I buy my books from mainstream ebook stores and I'm not suggesting anyone pirate any!
I originally got the VPN for Hulu and Netflix (US) and to watch shows on network websites like ABC, CBS, NBC without installing an antenna or subscribing to cable. An added benefit is that I can buy books not available to me in Canada from Books on Board and Amazon which are legit bookstores... If you were in Japan and unable to buy books in your language and of your choice you might find a vpn to be an appropriate solution to buy books.
Yes, it costs me money for the VPN but compared to cable it's dirt cheap. Are you confusing VPN (virtual private network) with torrent sites? I'm not sure I understand your post...

cdesja5-You mentioned pirating as a joke... I am only saying that if the sellers don't get their act together it could develop into a real problem there are already tons of pirated e book stuff on Torrent sites and Usenet/IRC and I do know what a VPN is lol..., I was not in any way advocating it or suggesting that is what you are doing... so relax

Not out of the box you cannot use Calibre to strip DRM. So just installing Calibre will not strip the DRM from any eBooks.
