Communication Issue between Touch and Windows 7
Hi All,
I'm hoping for a little help... I have a new Kobo Touch that won't communicate with my Windows 7 desktop. Because of the communication issue I ended up setting up the Touch on my laptop with no issues at all. (running vista). When I plug in my Touch to my Windows 7 machine it does not show up as a drive on the computer (although the message on the Touch says connected and charged). I cannot get Calibre, Adobe or Kobo Desktop to see the Touch either. Its kind of frustrating as I want to be able to use the Windows 7 computer to download books, etc. I've tried a host of things hoping to correct the problem. I've tried uninstallling Kobo Desktop and reinstalling. No help. I've tried different USB cables, different USB ports. I've tried resetting the touch and I've tried Factory resets. None of these things help. I've tried connecting my wife's Touch to this same computer with no luck. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, mvelle |

What (if anything) shows up in Windows Device Manager? Are there any entries for an unknown device?
Some people have mentioned that certain USB chipsets can be problematic (but I don't remember which ones) ![]() |

In Windows Device Manager it appears under the disk drives as "Kobo E-reader USB device"

Are there any other USB devices plugged in at the same time? (iPhone / iPlayer for instance)?
Could you try the steps mentioned in My device is not detected by calibre Any products (Anti Virus for instance) or settings changed to prevent Windows assigning a drive letter to your Touch? |

The only other device connected through USB is my keyboard and mouse.
I tried the steps in the link you posted and here are the results Calibre gave: Version: 0.8.64 USB devices on system: [u'usb\\root_hub&vid10de&pid036c&rev00a1', u'usb\\root_hub20&vid10de&pid036d&rev00a2', u'usb\\vid_045e&pid_00e3&rev_0053', u'usb\\vid_045e&pid_00e3&rev_0053&mi_00', u'usb\\vid_045e&pid_00e3&rev_0053&mi_01', u'usb\\vid_2237&pid_4163&rev_0110'] Traceback (most recent call last): File "site-packages\calibre\devices\scanner.py", line 89, in __call__ DriveError: No removable drives found Drives detected: Available plugins: ADAM ALEX ALURATEK_COLOR ANDROID ARCHOS7O AVANT AZBOOKA BAMBOOK BLACKBERRY BOEYE_BDX BOEYE_BEX BOOQ BOOX COBY COOL_ER CYBOOK DBOOK E52 E71X EB511 EB600 EBK52 ECLICTO EDGE EEEREADER ELONEX ESLICK EX124G FOLDER_DEVICE_FOR_CONFIG GEMEI GER2 HANLINV3 HANLINV5 ILIAD INVESBOOK IPAPYRUS IREXDR1000 IREXDR800 IRIVER_STORY ITALICA ITUNES JETBOOK JETBOOK_COLOR JETBOOK_MINI KINDLE KINDLE2 KINDLE_DX KINDLE_FIRE KOBO LIBREAIR LUMIREAD MENTOR MIBUK MOOVYBOOK N516 N770 N810 NEWSMY NEXTBOOK NOOK NOOK_COLOR NUUT2 ODYSSEY ORIZON PALMPRE PDNOVEL PDNOVEL_KOBO PI2 PICO PLAYBOOK POCKETBOOK301 POCKETBOOK360 POCKETBOOK360P POCKETBOOK602 POCKETBOOK622 POCKETBOOK701 PRS505 PRST1 README S60 SHINEBOOK SMART_DEVICE_APP SNE SOVOS SPECTRA STASH SUNSTECH_EB700 SWEEX TECLAST_K3 THEBOOK TREKSTOR USER_DEFINED VELOCITYMICRO WEBOS WEXLER Looking for devices... u'usb\\vid_2237&pid_4163&rev_0110' Devices possibly connected: None I've tried disabling my antivirus and my firewall while attaching the reader. Neither of these options helped either. If I plug a flashdrive into my computer it detects it right away. Not sure why it won't recognize the touch the same way. |

Is the laptop still seeing the Kobo as a drive?
Does Calibre there see it? Unfortunately, if one Windows install DOES see it and another does not, it leads me to think that the Windows install on the one machine is causing problems ![]() Sorry; I'm not sure what to suggest beyond this. calibre / Kobo Desktop / ADE / explorer won't see the Touch until Windows recognizes it as a USB storage device and assign a drive letter to it. Hmm... Do you see anything if you go into Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management and look at the Storage | Disk Management area (with the Kobo plugged in)? |

Thank you for all your help so far, I really appreciate it.
In answer to your questions: Yes, the laptop sees the Kobo as a drive. Yes, Calibre (on the laptop) sees the Kobo. As for your last point: I looked in Storage / Disk Management with the Kobo plugged in. It lists the Kobo there as: Disk 1 Removeable 1.33 GB Online The other drives there all have drive letters assigned to them C:, D:. But the Kobo does not have a drive letter assigned to it. If I right click on the Kobo from this menu I see the option to change drive letters and paths. When I attempt to do this I get an error message and am told that the Disk Management Console View is not up to date. Are we close to a solution? |

Does http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...0-c9484f571824 help? |

I agree with Peter. Once Windows 7 assigns the device a drive letter you should be fine. It certainly works for me.
Do you have another USB flash drive you can insert to see if the same thing happens to it? |

I had a similar problem with my old installation of XP Pro not recognizing an external backup drive. I mucked around for ages to no avail. Something had become corrupted. I couldn't allocated a drive letter to the external drive. I finally downloaded a trial of Zentimo which helped solve my problems and I actually then managed to reset all drive fixed letters plus several backup drives and things like the Kobo and memory sticks with unique letters from the second half of the alphabet once I could access that drive on that particular USB port.
I suspect some uninstall or other ripped out something pertinent. Could you try an XP repair from disk? You will lose all your personal settings preferences, but all your programmes and data should be safe. Always, always do a backup of data, just to be absolutely safe when mucking around like this. In my case, the repair wouldn't work though because of numerous updates I suppose. After a dead hard drive, I'm now running Win7 Pro (and hating it with a passion) and having no problems with Kobo or any other external device, but I did go and buy Zentimo just to be safe in the future. It's a nifty little bit of kit. Then again, it might just be easier to transfer your books from the PC on to a stick, plug in to the laptop and load from there. Good luck. I can second the use of Zentimo; I use the previous version called USB Safely Remove.

Thanks to all for your ideas. I'll try them soon and let you know if any help.
I tried a bunch of solutions last night to try and get a drive letter to show up but to no avail. I've loaded books from this machine, to a stick, to the lap top then onto the kobo. I've also used the kobo touch browser to access Calibre on this machine and I just set up drop box so I could use that to transfer files. So I do have options to use the Kobo. That being said, I'm going to keep trying to fix this issue with your suggestions and will let you know. |
