In Arizona, fifteen-year-old Miriam lives in a village where a girl's life has no value. Miriam has always believed that's how things should be, until a shocking event opens her eyes. Suddenly, Miriam becomes aware of the injustice of her world, and her terror turns into rage.
In Florida, laws are enforced by clerical courts. Medical student Veelin is falsely accused with moral crimes, and her life is in danger. She has only one way to escape oppression: to swim across the Florida strait to Cuba.
