				ebooks, the new paperback

Seventy years ago the paperback turned the publishing industry on end and there were cries of woe and doom for the American publishing industry. Now, in the second decade of the 21st century, 70 years after that upheaval, ebooks are causing the same ripples. http://www.teleread.com/publishing/w...my-number-one/ Read the linked article within the Teleread article. Very interesting read. |

I for one hope paperbacks stay popular. Most of my personal library is still secondhand paperbacks, picked up several for a dollar at thrift stores. I can't see ebooks ever filling that niche.

I have picked up more free and almost free ($1.99 & below) ebooks in 2 years than all the pbooks I have ever bought. In that vein, I do think that ebooks will replace the pbook as the choice for budget-minded readers in the future.

The fact that most of the ebooks I want cost at least 30% more than the paperback and sometimes more than the hardcover, they are not the new paperback. Ebooks for me right now are unaffordable and unpurchased.

Yes, apparently the author has not heard of the Penny Dreadful or the Dime Novel. Paperbacks were also popular in France in the early eighteen hundreds. Much of Dumas' (Père & fils) work was originally in paperback.

Likewise. I hope they at least stay as an option for kinds of books to buy. I know people who don't have computers and do not use the internet still. E-books kind of demand that people have regular internet usage and a pc.

I would happily ditch every paperback I own. Love hardcovers, but paperbacks get too tattered, the pages fall out, they're a mess.

[I really should go find a new copy of "Dune" - the movie edition I bought at the drug store across from the theater I saw the movie at back in '84 *is* starting to fall apart. Not a bad lifespan for a paperback I like to read every other year or so ] | |

I have heavily used paperbacks in good shape dating back to the 70's. A bit yellowed but otherwise fine. The ones from the 50's I have to be careful with as the glue has crystalized and the paper is drying out.

e-books have some of the traits that made paperbacks popular: convenient to carry around most times cheaper than the hardbacks adds more benefits by not being flammable does not clutter up the house downside - hard to loan or sell but easy to redownload |
