Free (Kindle US) The Hunt and Hooligans...by William Diehl/ Thrillers
Note from original poster:
Thread title changed again to reflect current free offers: (the first several posts of this thread relate to expired offers) Thanks to Nightbird (who spotted the current William Diehl offerings) for the update! See posts #9 and #10 for book details. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008NXV0R8 http://www.amazon.com/Hooligans-ebook/dp/B008O9AUMC As far as I'm aware, these are first-time backlist offers, and we've gotten 4 of them in very short order. I believe I've read all of these years ago: like all of Diehl's books, I found it very entertaining. Diehl writes thrillers that generally have a big plot twist at the end. My wife always claimed to see the plot twist coming way in advance, and therefore found the books less engrossing than I did (maybe being less intuitive has an advantage sometimes.....)-- definitely worth a try if you enjoy this type of book! Kent E (original post starts here) Both of the following have been offered previously, so you might already have them... If you missed them, and they're in a genre you enjoy, I can recommend both. Illegal by Paul Levine http://www.amazon.com/ILLEGAL-ebook/dp/B007Q4RO5W Free, July 4-July 8. This is a standalone thriller by the author of the Solomon vs. Lord series (legal mystery with comedic overtones) that's been mentioned in several recent threads in this forum. I must admit that the Solomon vs. Lord series are my personal favorite of his books, but all are worthy reads! (There's also a Lassiter series, more conventional mystery; and several standalone thrillers.) Levine's various books have received nominations for Edgar, International Thriller, Macavity and James Thurber awards. Levine's characters always seem to be fully fleshed-out, with lives and concerns beyond the direct plot aspects of the book. Seven Ways to Die by William Diehl http://www.amazon.com/Seven-Ways-to-.../dp/B007HH8B28 Free at least for today. Diehl was a New York Times bestselling author, perhaps most recognized for Sharky's Machine. When Diehl died in 2006, this novel was about 3/4 completed. It was finished with the help of long-time associates from Diehl's notes. KentE Last edited by KentE; 07-29-2012 at 06:19 PM. Reason: title & first post edited to reflect current offering |

Sharky's Machine by William Diehl is free today on Amazon US
Italy, 1944: A squad of American soldiers on a dangerous secret mission is ambushed and slaughtered . . . and a fortune in gold vanishes. Hong Kong, 1959: An aging American colonel, haunted by his wartime past, is brutally murdered in a luxurious brothel. Atlanta, 1975: The last survivor of the fatal World War II ambush in Italy is executed at point blank range in a parking lot. Blowing away a crazed, gun-wielding drug dealer on a crowded city bus gets police detective Sharky bounced from the narc squad into the dreaded dregs of the department--vice. That's where he stumbles on a high-priced call girl and her pimp who are fleecing rich johns in an even higher-priced blackmail scam. Together with his "machine" of hard-bitten vice squad veterans, Sharky closes in for a big sting. He doesn't count on falling for Domino, his alluring target. Or falling into the middle of the murderous design she's a part of--involving a hot presidential candidate, the shadowy multimillionaire who's backing him, and the ice-cold assassin they're using to wipe out the past . . . before it blows their future to hell. |

While the originally posted titles in the thread have expired, there is a new Paul Levine offering (actually, a repeat freebie).
A short story collection, The Road to Hell http://www.amazon.com/THE-ROAD-TO-HE.../dp/B004MYFU6Y This collection does include one short story featuring Solomon and Lord (mismatched male/female lawyers). From previous threads, it seems there are quite a few fans of this series on MobileRead. I have read this collection, and it's all quality: the Solomon & Lord short was a special treat. And of course, the Sharkey's Machine/ William Diehl novel listed just above by Mitford13 is still very much active! (and I recommend it, as well.) KentE |

Another free Diehl [
![]() Chameleon Two crack reporters are hot on the trail of a deadly assassin who’s killing world petroleum experts to hide the discovery of a new oil deposit. FRANK O’HARA is a brilliant investigative reporter who’s been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his searing expose of the CIA. In the face of CIA retaliation – the agency has sent a string of assassins after him – O’Hara has “disappeared” into the Japanese countryside, mastering the most arduous disciplines of self-defense and mental stamina. CHARLES GORDON HOWE, the crippled owner of a Boston television station and newspaper, receives a mysterious tip on what could be the biggest story since Watergate. He decides O’Hara is the only man who could possibly break the story, and after forcing the CIA to call off its hunt, he sends ELIZA GUNN, his own top reporter, to bring O’Hara in. Together, O’Hara and Eliza, five feet tall, tough and beautiful, embark on a far-flung journey—from Boston to the Caribbean islands and ultimately back to Japan. They are chasing someone known only as CHAMELEON, feared by all, known by none, is quite possibly the most menacing and mysteriously elusive person alive. Their chase takes O’Hara and Eliza through the dangerous, absurd and mind-boggling realms of huge oil cartels, big business and international conspiracies connecting back to World War II and leads them along a devastating path of ruthless destruction. |

KentE, I changed the forum thread title to match the first post title change you made, so it would show in the list of threads. Thank you for making the note in the first post to explain the first few posts about the other offers. |

Thanks, Nightbird, for the updated offers! I've asked that the title be changed to reflect your catches, and point new observers to the active offers at the bottom of the thread.
It seems really rare to get this many freebies from a noted author in such short order! Kent E |

KentE, the title has been changed to match your first post title.
I check through here a couple of times a day and try to catch changes, but a quick way to catch a moderator's attention to a specific thread is to report the first post of the thread and give the title change you would like. ![]() Normally, quick changes are made to reflect purchase site additions or removals, so a different title should have the OP's request (some exceptions apply ![]() |
