I know I read this one in the seventies, but I'm darned if I can remember the plot.
I guess I'll just have to read it again....

I would guess there is a diabolical plot. Someone wants to reveal it to Doc, but gets killed on the way to his office, but Doc discovers clues from the guy's body and/or by seeing the assassin. (That's the set up for about half of 'em)

I swear, he would have saved so many lives if he had his headquarters at the 2nd floor of the Empire State Building, not the top

Oh yeah, so true !

I've read Lester Dent's formula for writing pulp stories - http://www.paper-dragon.com/1939/dent.html - and he makes it sound so easy. (Well, I suppose it was for him!)

You also have to remember that he wrote pot boilers for the most part when writing Doc Savage (IMO) at least. Doc just happens to either know the info he needs or knows where to look for it or his strength etc. saves the day. There's a bit of the formula about them that other books don't have. We know he'll always triumph in the end no matter what the villain throws at him.
