50 Shades Of Absolute Crap
I was warned and I was told but I got 50 Shades of Grey and all I can say it was THE worst book I have ever read. Seriously....THE WORST. I wanted to put my KT through a window that's how much I hated the book.
Why the hell is it so popular world over? I don't get it? I felt my IQ lowering after the first chapter.... |

Morgan there are a couple of Letters to the Editor (Weekend Sydney Morning Herald, paper version) that say just exactly that as well!!
Gotta ask though .... why did you bother to finish reading it? (No, I haven't bought it, and nor have I bothered to read any info at all on it!!) |

I haven't read these books but took a look to see why all the interest..... popularity never has been an indication of how good something is, has it?

My wife and I went to visit my M-I-L a few days ago - she is in an old people's "resort". Among the old ladies sitting rugged up in their wheelchairs, at least five of them had one of the Fifty Shades books. These are women in their seventies and eighties. Three of my daughters have read them and they have now been downloaded to my wife's Kindle.
It would seem that guys could learn something from these books if they engender that sort of enthusiasm among women of all ages. I have yet to read one, though I do have them available from Amazon. My wife and I share an account. I had enough trouble trying to struggle through a Chelsea Handler book. (I didn't succeed, dropped it a third of the way through.) |

Could it be that it is a book for girls, in other words a chicks book ?
Or is it just poorly written ? |

If you were looking for the Booker prizewinner then you're obviously not going to find it here, but it's amazing the number of articles and posts I've seen from people who must have had ample opportunity to know what they were getting into but come out saying "I'm shocked, shocked I tell you, to find out that this is not great literature" (apologies to Claude Rains). But if it makes you feel better to say so, then fine. There's a article in the Grauniad entitled "Why women love Fifty Shades of Grey" that you may want to read if you're interested, and a whole section analyzing down to the nuts and bolts, ranging from "horrified Islington intelligentsia" to a "who wrote this erotica?" quiz and a who writes the best sex scenes article (though, being the Grauniad, they did have to qualify it as the best "literary" sex scenes. It all seems to come down to the original answer - sex sells (particularly "naughty" sex). Who'd a thunk it? I know if I do ever read it I won't be expecting mental stimulation, well, at least not IQ type mental stimulation. But that's OK. I think my IQ can stand the battering for one or two books at least. On the train back from work on Friday there were three women reading books within my eyeline. All were reading a 50 Shades book. A fourth had a Kindle, so no way of knowing what she was reading.

The percentage of readers who are going to go out and buy serious whips and floggers, or indulge in breath, knife, blood or fire play after reading this is probably miniscule. As I said I haven't read it yet but I'd lay long odds there's pre-existing porn all over the net which is way more graphic and way more off base than Fifty Shades. She didn't exactly invent this stuff. Sex toy sales have gone up, sure. Probably a good thing for all concerned. But I think anything beyond a little more adventurous slap and tickle is going to stay firmly in fantasyland for most readers.

The topic doesn't bother me much. The writing does. Poor language. Poor as in unimaginative, repetetive, over simplistic. |
