Another new owner

Ok, I passed by the display kiosk in our local Borders last night and it was instantly obvious that I was going to have to take one home.

I'd heard about the reader in the past and was curious, but one look at that display and I was sold.

Having owned many other gadget type devices that never went anywhere, it will be interesting to see if the market for this (and similar) devices thrives or not.

The content available from the Sony-My-First-eBook-Store is quite disappointing at the moment (seems like a few hundred titles that show up over and over in different (inappropriate) categories), so hopefully this will improve.

So far reading on the device is completely effortless.

With the release of the eInk screen technology we've finally crossed the line from where reading on a device was a poorer experience than reading on paper to where the experience is equivalent and likely to get even better.

The page-turn screen effect starts out being annoying. I think this is because the text-interpreting part of your brain tries to track through the transition and gets completely lost. Once you learn that the stuff "between pages" is meaningless and you can safely pay no attention to it, the problem goes away.

Anyway, it's a very cool toy.

Z.

Good observation on the page turn, Zoot! In regular reading, your mind has probably learned to ignore the jump between the bottom of one page and the top of another, although I sometimes re-read a complex passage when page-turning.

Doesn't it irk you when magazines and newspapers do that "continued on page X" when you're reading an article? I hate having to fish for the next page--I always have to re-read the straddling paragraph. Discover magazine almost never does that to their articles; it's one of the reasons I love them so much.

Unhappy New Owner

I got my portable reader, charged it, closed it with full charge. The next day I boarded a plane; when I opened the reader it only had half charge. I used it for about half hour and it froze as the charge was depleted.

So, I thought maybe I had left it on previous to plane. So, as I had no way to charge while I was away, I charged it when I came home. I used it for about an hour, turned it off with full charge again and today when I turned it on, half charge. Then 5 minutes later, one bar.

What am I doing wrong. I travel a lot and was looking forward to not carrying multiple books. But I feel let down.
Help!

Sounds like you might be running audio in the background.
