Display the Date of News on Kindle

I'm using Calibre to download newspapers such as The Times UK, The Guardian and The Age. These are then being sent automatically to my kindle device via myname@kindle.com. All good so far.

When they appear on the Kindle they are displayed as Title & Author:
The Age > Calibre
The Times UK > Calibre
The Guardian > Calibre
What I'd like to see instead is Title & Date:
The Age > Fri, Feb 3 2012
The Times UK > Fri, Feb 3 2012
The Guardian > Fri, Feb 3 2012
I'm new to both Calibre and to the Kindle and not really sure how to approach this. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I'd also like to know if the documents can be treated by the kindle as periodicals as they would be if I had a subscription to The Guardian. This way they would be automatically archived each day as Back Issues..

Cheers Russell

Do you have wifi? Amazon will be charging you for transferring documents using Whispernet (3G) with the myname@kindle.com email address. If you use the myname@free.kindle.com address instead then it's free and the documents can be downloaded to your Kindle with wifi.

I've seen some posts by Kovid about the naming convention for news downloads, I think if you sideload the news via a cable then the date will show up.

Hi

Thanks for your thoughts. Just to confirm, my Kindle is Wifi only and doesn't have 3G. If I want to access stuff when out of the house, I just hook up to my iPhone as it has a large data allowance.

I'll check out the posts by Kovid and see if I can find anything.

You misunderstand, Amazon uses Whispernet to deliver books and documents to your Kindle, whether the Kindle has 3G or not. Amazon delivers the books you buy from them for free, but charges for delivery of personal documents (anything you email to your Kindle).
Quote:
Fees for the Kindle Personal Documents Service via Whispernet are based on the size of the file submitted (before compression if you use a .zip file), your country, and where you're accessing Whispernet. Personal documents service fees will only be charged for documents that are successfully delivered to your Kindle device via Whispernet. Personal documents service fees are rounded up to the next whole MB and apply to each personal document delivered via Whispernet to each Kindle device.

For Kindle device users living in the United States, the Kindle Personal Documents Service fee via Whispernet is $.15 per megabyte while inside the United States and $.99 per megabyte when traveling outside the United States.
If you don't want to be charged, then you need to use wifi and the @free.kindle.com address.
Quote:
Note: You can also send your personal documents via e-mail as attachments to [name]@free.kindle.com. To have a document converted to Kindle format (.azw), the subject line should be "convert." Kindle Personal Documents Service will attempt to deliver your personal documents to your Kindle device via Wi-Fi when connected, and to the e-mail address associated with the Amazon account to which the device is registered. You can use the e-mail to download the file to your computer and transfer it to your Kindle device using a USB connection.

According to Amazon, whispernet refers to 3G deliver. There is no charge for wifi delivery regardless of address.

Kindle Personal Documents Service doesn't charge fees for delivery of personal documents to Kindle devices over Wi-Fi or to supported Kindle reading applications.

Using the free address only prevents delivery via 3G for devices that support it.

Thanks for the clarification, a friend racked up a bunch of charges for emailing documents and I thought it was a wifi only Kindle which is why I suggest the @free.kindle.com address to people. I'll have to double check what model he had.

Looks like the 0.8.38 update to calibre will use metadata plugboards for autosending news via email, so you could set up a plugboard with the date as the author field for anything tagged news and it would display on your device the way you want.

What template/plugboard settings did you use? I'm having difficulty figuring it out.

For anybody else who's wondering, I figured it out. This is what worked for me:
  1. click Preferences
  2. click Metadata plugboards under import/export
  3. next to "Add new plugboard"
    1. select "any format" under Format
    2. select "email" under Device
    3. copy and paste the following into the "source template" box:
      Code:
      {tags:'contains($, 'News', field('date'), field('authors'))'}
    4. select "authors" under Destination field
  4. click Save plugboard
  5. click Close on the Preferences window

With that, anything I send to my Kindle Touch by emailing my @kindle.com address that has "News" amongst its tags gets a "Date" as the author, while other items still have the author.
