Final Amazon ebook purchase?
For those that will be moving away from Amazon now that D&T has ceased, did you make any last minute Amazon exclusive purchases?
Yesterday I hit my $3 Kindle points credit and I got a $5 Amazon card from Bing, so as my last purchase I picked up Dawn of the Vampire by William Hill. It's Amazon exclusive and is always $10. TBH, I have the book in paper and remember setting it aside twenty+ years ago. So it's likely not very good. But the concept is so good it stayed in the back of my mind for years. |

I suppose if we're counting comics, it would be The New 52: Future's End Vol. 1, which I bought just yesterday. But in all honesty I'll probably continue buying comics from Amazon even after the D&T is removed, because their previous acquisition of Comixology simply gives it by far the best selection of Marvel and DC comics available anywhere online (short of piracy), and I don't think there's anywhere else comparable that has an easily-defeated DRM scheme. I'll continue to use HumbleBundle and other resources for not Marvel/DC.
If we're talking about books, it would appear to be Mother of Kings by Poul Anderson. I don't remember why I got that one via Amazon rather than Kobo. Most likely it had a sale price going only on Amazon and I couldn't be bothered to reach out to Kobo for a price match. |

I don't plan to move entirely away from Amazon until all DRM removal options are gone. But I'll certainly buy less from them.
I didn't make any last minute purchases. |

No last minute purchases for me, there's nothing I want at the moment. I'm periodically checking my Amazon.co.uk account for the download and transfer option, it's still showing, when it isn't I will delete my account (I'm only keeping it until then just in case there is a last minute oh my gosh I didn't download that book, but Im sure Ive got them all)

I've over 100 titles on my wish lists, but there is nothing compelling that's Amazon exclusive. I will try and figure out Kobo's price match. Also logged in Amazon prices are sometimes more or less than not logged in on UK, or different to someone else in Ireland logged in. It will be interesting to see how the Price match works out. A number of titles on Amazon UK are actually dearer than Kobo UK right now on my lists.

I use Amazon (regular) for more than books. That section will get less visit (and probably 0 purchases).
I seriously recommend that you DON'T delete your account. You lose all that you had. on their servers. Just go inactive. remove account info from your device to stop purchases from there. (BUT remember those details if you need to put it back) |

I'm a Euro. Mostly using German Amazon, occasionally Belgian, Dutch or very rarely French. I will not order anything from dot/com (taxes/delivery costs) and now no books, that's over. Besides, it is mostly a Chinese market now.

I use Amazon a great deal, just not for books. What it saves me in S/H fees is worth its weight in gold or at the very least what I pay to be an Prime member.

I did have a $3.00 Kindle credit so I used it. I am probably done with books from Amazon, but never say never. I never thought I would enjoy a reader without buttons, but I am.

I don't purchase that many books, and the last few were bought from other sources anyway, and drm removal was easy. The majority of my reading is library books and KU. The lack of download isn't an issue for me. Books purchased in the past had been downloaded long ago. There are plenty of other sources when I want to purchase a book.
We buy often from Amazon, points back on the credit card earned about 4 times the cost of Prime, and we never carry a balance. I've no reason to jump ship. |

Me too. I'm not closing my account. Just not buying ebooks.
For me, Amazon is like a junk drawer store. If I need groceries or electronics, I'll go to a brick and mortar store. But if I need weird items (mason jars, a safety can opener, canned air) that is what I use Amazon for. Last edited by ZodWallop; 02-26-2025 at 10:45 PM. |
