				Another recommendation thread..

Hi guys, found this site through whirlpool as i am in the market for an ebook reader. I reside in Australia so can anyone recommend me a store that ships internationally?

To cut the chase, here's what i am looking for my dream "ebook" Will be used to read books and the majority of my ebooks are in PDF/text/words format. Need one that has the latest E-ink technology as previously my eyes killed me from constantly reading from my smartphone (bright LCD screen is not the way to read imho) I don't mind the slow refresh rate but when it refresh the screen it changes to a different colour (normally black) and that i find annoying and will wreck my eye..is there a way to change this in the settings?.would prefer that when you flicker through each pages, the screen goes blank then ink appears? Looking for anything under 500.. Learning toward the Sony Reader (PRS-505)....i dont mine converting all my files to the sony format but what is that format? Any other recommendation for quality ebook reader? i dont need stuff like mp3, wireless etc..but definitely need an external card slot (SD card) |

I believe the black flash when you turn a page is inherant to the e-Ink technology - certainly it's something that's part of the Sony Reader & not tweakable. Having said that, in practice, you quickly get used to it & don't notice it.

Sony format is .lrf (details on Wiki here) but conversion options include libprs500 or Book Designer (multiple output formats). Note that reports suggest that the 505's not that good with more than a few hundred books loaded, so it's not a matter of "load everything & choose". Best way is to just load a selection from a PC, alternatively have them split between a number of small SD cards, loading just one at a time. |

On the Cybook Gen3 you can turn the flashing off at the price of some ghosting. I do not do it myself since the flashing is a good indicator that you have pressed the page turning button properly.

What's the ideal format for the Sony Reader? Does it take native PDF? |

It will display native PDF, but results are marginal, as you're trying to display a page designed for a full sheet of paper (A4/Letter) in an area approx a 1/4 of the size. If you *need* PDF, then maybe you need the iLiad or a tablet PC.

See https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/PRS505 and https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/LRF#LRF for more info on the Sony & it's native format. Note that you can download & install the various software beforehand to try & get an idea as to how things'll convert & look. (I.e. libprs500 - converter & viewer, Book Designer - converter, Sony's eBook Library - viewer) |
