Is my 650 dead?

Tonight, my 650 just refuses to start up. I read on it this morning but this evening it's showing the screen save image, but the power on slide just does nothing. I've tried pushing the recessed reset button too, with no effect at all. I'm pretty sure it's fully charged as I charged it overnight from the mains prior to leaving on my trip this morning.

Any suggestions or advice gratefully received

I'd try charging it again--something may have happened that caused the battery to discharge rapidly for some unknown reason. Other than that, I don't have any other suggestions.

Hope you get it working again!

Tried a Factory reset ?
You'll need to make sure all content is backed-up, as this is wiped in the process - else it's Sony support - sorry...

Thanks both.

Bizarrely, for some reason, it just started working again this morning. More out of hope than expectation, I tried to turn it on and it just started up as normal. The only odd thing about it was that it seemed to have 'forgotten' about the last 200 pages worth of reading I'd done, i.e. it opened my current book at page 9 when I know I was up to page 200 and something. The history didn't show anything beyond page 9 either.

I hope this isn't an indication that it's starting to go terminally wrong, but, if it is, at least it gives me the perfect excuse to buy a new reader

Glad your reader is back.

For what it is worth:
Probably there is a problem with the power-slider.
Just ignoring your first wake-attempt.

So the reader was still in hybernation when you pressed the reset-button and cut it short. Erasing current history and all.
As with all e-ink devices the screen would not change on reset - but stay infinit.

Then the next push of the power-slider was recognised, restarting the reader.

Have you replaced the battery? Should cost about$25-$40. Only two micro-screws. There's a video on YouTube if you have questions.

Thanks Mark, that certainly seems to make sense. I'll keep an eye on it.

Thanks LibraryLady, I'll bear it in mind, but it did still have a full charge when it came back to life, so I'm hoping the battery is OK.

How doI get to this video please ? Is it really that easy ?
I'd like to keep all the instructions/video for the day the battery goes - it'li apply to the 350 as well, presumably.

Don't suppose anyone's done a T1 yet, have they ?

I tried with my 505 and although the instructions were good, apparently my technique wasn't so great and I slightly nicked the ribbon tape that controls the buttons (apparently that happens often according to forum comments I've read) making my reader inoperable. That made it the most expensive battery ever because I had to get a new reader AND I had paid $35 for the battery and shipping, which was then useless... As long as you realize that it "may" not work out and are OK with it, it's worth a try.
The site where the videos are posted is the one for the battery supplier:

I avoid using the power switch. It's flaky and integrated into the MB. It can break and then it's bye-bye 650.

I use Prs+ to turn off the touch screen when I'm not using. I don't use sleep mode. I shut it down completely at night.

I have 3 Sony ereaders and these things happen. No idea why but a very good chance that it will not happen often. And so far in my case the reader can be made to function again.

If you shut it down completely at night how do you turn it back on again without using the power switch?

Is this something else PRS+ can do?

Do you tend to keep only a few books on your reader? On mine, it takes ~7 minutes for it to start up from off/disconnect from computer, but I have 800+ books on mine. Or does PRS+ stop the reader from scanning or whatever it does that takes it so long to load?

For anyone with a T1, did Sony fix the scanning issue when they switched to Android?

Two things I've found about my 650:
1. If I try to use the reset button, the reader doesn't start up unless I have it plugged into the comp. It might work if you have it plugged into a wall outlet, but I don't have a charger. I've only used the reset button when the reader is hung for whatever reason.
2. Since I have so many books on my reader, it also takes what feels like 15+ seconds to exit out of a book when I hit the Home button or use the Options->Return to List option. However, if I hit Options and then Home, it only takes 2-3 seconds to go to the Home screen.
