Hollows series - Kim Harrison
Just started reading the first book in this series - "Dead Witch Walking." I got it for free sometime back and just now got around to reading it.
The book is pretty good - inventive, good writing. The edition I have has some errors that should have been caught by the editor, e.g., "gate" for "gait." I'm thinking it was self-pubbed by the author to get some interest. How does the series hold up if I want to start getting the following books? --MH |

My wife and I have read the whole series, and have enjoyed it pretty well. It's definitely a different take on witches/vampires/pixies. It's a series that we have recommended to a few friends.

This series is part of my reading challenge for later this year . The first few books (maybe 5 or 6) will be rereads, and I just pre-ordered the paperback edition of A Perfect Blood (The Hollows #10), which is supposed to come out on September 25th.
![]() To answer your question, I do remember their getting better, darker and more intense with each book. You feel (for better or worse) for all of the characters, and some who seem minor at first grow to have major impact later on. Last edited by Nyssa; 06-20-2012 at 07:13 PM. |

Depends on what you like about it. I agree, it got darker and darker as it went on. I lost interest in it a few books ago. It also went to a place with Rachel that I didn't like.

I've read the first 3 books and the first short story and I've liked them. I do plan on reading more in July or August.

I gave the first volume a shot a good while back, simply because I thought I ought to sample this new genre which had swamped the book stores. The Hollows seemed to be among the best of the bunch, but I couldn't get into it. I thought the writing was several degrees short of amazing and I just couldn't make myself feel a thing for the characters involved.
To ape Mr. Lovesauce: liked the setting, utterly indifferent to everything else. Ended up giving it away. |

I enjoyed the first book, and books 5-7. There are storylines and characters that really grab me, and others that turn me off. The main character started to let me down in more recent books. I'm hoping the next book in the series, Ever After, (#11) takes the plot where I want it to go. I'll read every book that comes out though, and there will be 13 books in the series.

I enjoyed the series, ignoring the corny titles. It has a young-adult feel to it in that it never seems to get too dark and scary. I'd have liked a little more grit and fear for my taste.

I really like the dresden files and most simlar themed books but I couldn't get past the first chapter in the hollows books. Attempted it on 2 or 3 occasions and just couldn't stand the writing It was the use of the word "I" in almost every sentence it completely made me feel like I was reading something written by a child in school.
Maybe they get better but it drove me mad in the first few pages. |

I have enjoyed this series from the beginning. The latest book was frustrating for the first 2/3 of the book, but ended in a place that will keep me reading further.

I like the series, but haven't gotten to the latest one or two yet. I also liked her earlier Dawn Cook fantasy stuff fairly well.
