Michael Z. Williamson

After taking a break from sci-fi books for a little while I have decided to start a whole new crop of authors that I have selected from the several sci-fi electronic book stores. The first author that I have selected is Michael Williamson, it seems that he has published with a variety of different publishers one of which is downloadable for $0, called Its better to Ask Forgiveness. I have not read much of the book as yet but from what I can tell its starting out quite well. What is your opinion of his writing? If I like his witting I have no problems paying for the books and tracking down his writings with DAW books. However I like the ability to sample his writing without putting up any of my hard earned dollars to do it, if i like it I will pay for the additional books. Should have a smilie with an electronic book reader not simply one with a printed book.

I read Freehold from Baen. You'll find that online free library/baen cd style.

His writing is your basic ok professional from what I have seen.

So pretty easy to sample that one!

I highly recommend sampling Freehold, Better to Beg Forgiveness, and The Hero (the latter co-written with John Ringo), all of which are available from the Baen Free Library or the Baen CDs, before shelling out money for Williamson's works. I think he could be a competent author if only he managed to suppress his overwhelming need to proselytize for his right-wing/Libertarian ideology long enough for the story to have a chance to make it through the propaganda and to the reader.

Case in point: The Hero. It's reasonably free of political bullshit and manages to be a rather decent, if occasionally somewhat long-winded S/F action story. Contrast this with Freehold, which is so busy singing the praises of Libertarianism that the underlying military S/F story never gets off the ground and slowly suffocates to death.

I really enjoyed Freehold. A great first read and, as Gudy mentioned, available for free.

I also enjoyed Freehold but only thought Better to Beg Forgiveness was just OK.

I need a little help here: I have been able to find very little information on any book organization by Micahel Williamson and what little I have found is over at wikipedia and fictfact and the informaiton that I have been able to find has been conflicting at best. Fictfact lists my current book, Better to Beg Forgiveness as book two in the freehold series while Wikipedia lists it as the first in the Ripple Creek series which it also appends the name of the freehold series onto, so I am at a bit of a loss which of the sites is telling me the correct order and which one is not correct at all. I have often found that both sources can be wrong at the same time so I am a little skeptical of the information that I am getting.

I look to Fantastic Fiction for information about series book order.

Now having said that it looks like their Michael Z. Williamson page is a bit messed up (I've never seen that before at this site...it's usually VERY reliable).
http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/w/...-z-williamson/

I know that Freehold is 1st, and The Weapon is 2nd. After that I guess it's Contact with Chaos and then Rogue.

It lists Better to Beg Forgiveness as the 1st book in a Freehold subseries:
Freehold: Ripple Creek

Hope this helps!
