(K) Two for $1.99 on Amazon - Master and Commander & The Eagle Has Landed
Thought it worth noting that the first in the Aubrey/Maturin series has been reduced from $9.99 to 1.99 - can only hope more reductions in the series will follow...
Master and Commander (Aubrey/Maturin Novels) - Patrick O'Brien http://www.amazon.com/Master-Command...dp/B006C3Q6GG/ This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, R.N., and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against a thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of a life aboard a man-of-war are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the roar of broadsides as the great ships close in battle. Also, another oldie but goodie is today's Kindle Daily Deal, for $1.99: The Eagle Has Landed - Jack Higgins http://www.amazon.com/Eagle-Landed-L...dp/B004RDKPMO/ In November of 1943, an elite team of Nazi paratroopers descends on British soil with a diabolical goal: to abduct Winston Churchill and cripple the Allied war effort. The mission, ordered by Hitler himself and planned by Heinrich Himmler, is led by ace agent Kurt Steiner and aided on the ground by IRA gunman Liam Devlin. |

I tried to get this from Google Play because they sell it in epub format. My purchase kept being blocked by technical difficulties, so I wasn't able to get it before their offer expired.
I had to jump through some hoops to buy it from Kindle and convert it to epub, but it was worth the aggravation to get such a good deal. Thanks for the heads up! |

The O'Brien series is terrific - I have the complete set on the shelves, and often revisit them.
I find you need to work yourself into the language, structure, and delivery a bit more than most, at first - but then the works kind of wrap you up in their amazingly complete world of the time. Without question, well worth the effort. Very sad there will be no more..... |
