epub to rtf issue

This may have been covered elsewhere, but I was unable to spot it if it has been. Here's the problem: every document I convert from epub to rtf, when viewed in Word, has a space and a tab following each paragraph mark. Now it isn't a big deal to search and replace to remove them, but it would even easier if the document was converted without them. What might be going on and how might I fix it?
