Kindle app on Vox?

I'm finding myself very tempted by the idea of a 7" tablet, and the Kobo Vox looks like a good option. Am I right in thinking that the Vox is basically a 7" tablet with the Kobo app pre-installed? I'm also guessing that the marketplace that is installed doesn't have the Kindle app, or does it?

You can get the Kindle app and sideload it onto a Vox. Available here and other places as well. I can't tell you how well it works, having never tried it.

What do you want to do with the tablet besides reading?

While my family has two, they are used exclusively by my kids as the Kobos cannot handle what I need them for. The Vox is great for reading, videos, simple games, making notes and I would recommend it for such. The screen is great, more usable in sunlight than most other screens.

If you need GPS, camera, microphone, Blue tooth, etc, you'll be disapointed in the Vox. I use an Acer A100 and it's a good deal if you can find it cheap (screen and battery life are not as good as other tablets out there, but not deal breakers for me).

To be honest, I don't expect to use it for reading much, but it'd be nice to have the Kindle app available when I do want to read on it, since I've already got a K3 and the Kindle app on my phone.

My expectation is that it'll be used for web browsing, reading books to my son (usually he prefers paper books, but I have a few Kindle books that he likes), and e-mail.

I need "under £150" more than I need any of those I'll have a look at the Acer A100, though.

I got an off brand for the kids for their birthday and while getting other apps was possible, it was very hard to get Google software installed and running right behind GetJar.

The Vox is perfect for those uses - especially reading to your son!
There are lot good apps for kids out there as well that run fine on the Vox. If your phone is android and has Google Play access, you can transfer free apps from your phone to the Vox.

I hear you! Having twins means no hand-me-down clothes for the kids!
Having watched other people spend money cheap tablets and outgrow them quickly, then spend more money on a tablet that does what they want makes me cautious. It's kind of like Terry Pratchetts Boots theory:

Quote:
“The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.”

The Kindle app for the Vox is available at the site linked above. It's handy when new books come out and are only available in the Kindle format, not epub, which is most of the time. That's the reason I got the Kindle app. As I recall, it has more and better features than the Kobo reader. However, I've mostly been reading books with Aldiko, which I find better than the rest. Even when I get library books with Overdrive, I strip the DRM with a Calibre add-on so I can read them with Aldiko. This has the additional advantage of being able to finish reading the book after its expiry date because I'm usually in the middle of another book when a library book I have on hold becomes available, so I'd only have a week to read it by the time I get to it. Yeah, I'm not a speed-reader.

However, the newest (May 2012) version of Overdrive has an amazing new feature, the ability to zoom photos and illustrations if you long-press them. That's something I haven't seen in any other reader.

Sorry for the delay in responding - I've been away and my phone died, so no internet access

Having done a bit more looking around, a Kobo Vox is looking less likely. I'll probably wait until I can get a tablet running Android 4, by a known name, for £100. Right now I could get two of those three, so I figure I should be able to get all three fairly soon, and I'm not in a great hurry.

The Kindle app on the Kobo Vox works well -- I use it regularly for books that I buy on Amazon rather than the Kobo store.

Unfortunately, the DRM in use by ebook publishers means several different ebook readers to take care of all of your needs (I use Kobo, Overdrive, Kindle and Zinio, depending on content), but the Kobo Vox works well with all of them.

It's good to have the Kindle App on the vox because Kindle has the daily discount deal and sometimes you will want to purchase that. I like having the option of accessing both Kobo and Kindle books. The Kindle app works beautifully on my vox, thanks to the help of users here.

Now that we have Google Play, you should be downloading it from Play instead of the sites mentioned earlier. It is always best to grab your apps from a trusted source (such as Google or the app's developer).
