Beware that shipping mode partially discharges the battery, as required for shipping or storage of lithium ion batteries like the kindle uses.

If that photo is the same model as the computer you want to reset, that is a K4 (kindle mini).

I tried creating a special RUNME.sh script for you to use that would do this for you, but I ended up "soft bricking" my K4 (I can still boot it, but only by using the MfgTool program from the "Select Boot" thread in the "Kindle Developer's Corner" forum. I need to fix that first. These things are very touchy and much too easy to brick. Thankfully *somebody* put together some tools and instructions making it "relatively" easy to debrick them, which you can find in the "simple debricking" and "select boot" threads on the developer's forum.

Anyway, I will try to get you a tool to do this. The "shipping_mode" script on the main boot partition fails with "missing whitelist files" errors. It looks like you can only use it to set shipping mode ONE TIME, after which it deletes stuff it needs.

However, I am sure there is some way to do it, if we can just put in enough research to figure it out.

You *could* save that "shipping mode" image as the only screensaver image, if you want to "fake" it.

What is the purpose of putting it in "shipping mode"?

Same reason you set a car odometer back before selling it "as new". But in the case of a computing device, it can look "new in box" even after malware is installed. This can be especially handy for industrial espionage.

geekmaster maybe know it, but Shipping mode could be easily set from diagnostics mode. Only there will no "shipping picture" appears. It will just freeze and will not respond even to the Power button, there is needed to connect USB cable from computer, to turn on.

The shipping mode function in diags discharges the battery if it is higher than 70 percent charge. It does not change anything on the main partition to make it display the "shipping" image.

This shipping function is a good thing to do before shipping a kindle with a delivery service (lithium battery safety), and for long term storage (not using it for many months).

Lithium ion batteries like the kindles use actually have a longer overall lifespan if they do not have a full charge.

That function is in the diags menu. You can read how to get there in the K4 hacking wiki (ENABLE_DIAGS file). It will discharge the battery below 70% for safe shipping, or for long-term storage (to extend battery life).
