His magnum opus was The Great War and Modern Memory.
I read another of books, Class and it was excellent, wickedly barbed satire. Recommended.

He was badly wounded in France in WW2 as an infantry Lt. His book "Wartime: Understanding and Behavior in the Second World War" is also a rewarding read, although not a cultural landmark like "The Great War and Modern Memory"

A superb historian of wars .... his keen erudition & insights will be sorely missed.

I remember reading his books in an undergraduate seminar on the experience of modern warfare, back in the late 80s. Changed the way I thought about war, from a focus on weapons and technology to the people who used them and were in turn destroyed by them (even if they were never took a physical wound).
