The Dark Path by Luke Romyn. Horror. MR member (although I haven't seen him for awhile) gives us his 2009 book published by Wild Child free at least for today.

The Scavenger's Daughter: A Tyler West Mystery by Mike McIntyre. Thriller. Claims to be published in 2010 by Kite Press. I can't find any info on them. Despite the glowing reviews I found the sample to be mediocre. Author is a newspaper journalist.

Safe Harbor by Rosemary McCracken. Mystery/suspense. A repeat freebie published by Canadian publisher Imajin (pronounced like imagine) the debut novel that was shortlisted for Britain's Crime Writers' Association's Debut Dagger Award in 2010.

The Consultant (Barry/McCall Series) by Claude Bouchard. Crime/drama I'm guessing. The Montreal residing author decided to put the 2nd book in the series as free promo but reviewers say to read his first book Vigilante before this one. Positive reviews. Suspicions raised. Self published on lulu. Sample first.

The friendly takeover of CSS Inc. leaves computer executive Chris Barry unemployed, very wealthy and pleased with the situation.

But the hiatus is short-lived...

As a result of his involvement in the recent Vigilante investigation, Barry is approached by Jonathan Addley and invited to join Discreet Activities, a government agency of the clandestine variety,

Accepting, he promptly takes on his first assignment under the guise of an IT consultant, to investigate possible links between a local import business and the murder of its MIS director.

October's Ghost by Ryne Douglas Pearson. A techno thriller in his Art Jefferson series originally published in 1994 by W Morrow. He has been reviewed by PW and LJ. One of his screenplays became a film Mercury Rising, I believe.

This would-be techno-thriller initially appears to have the requisite action ingredients. While the Russians and Americans are at a delicate point in disarmament talks, a U.S. submarine vanishes. In Cuba, as an anti-Castro revolt nears success, Castro launches an atomic warhead hidden for 30 years. Then an FBI agent is gunned down in L.A. by Cuban hit men out to silence a defector. But almost immediately, Pearson's ( Cloudburst ) sprawling, overcrowded novel becomes mired in its own excesses. Events escalate at a barely manageable rate, as informers are chased, a boozing journalist survives one narrow escape after another, and the LA police try to solve domestic crimes with international overtones. In addition to an overwhelming number of poorly defined characters and turgid prose, the novel suffers from Pearson's incomplete mastery of present and past events as he mingles history with speculation. Some readers may also be short-circuited by all the techno-babble. Still, this partial misfire provides ample fodder for conspiracy buffs and military historians to chew on.

Forgot to mention his book Cloudburst is also free. PW seemed to like this one better.
