Experienced with e-reader, need a new one.

Hello

Since more then 3 years, I use an ebook-reader, and I love it. But it is slow, compared to modern readers. And recently, I found more and more problems, like: when I press a button, it doesn't react like it it in the past. Sometimes, I have to press the button twice. (and this is not only with one button, but with a few of them, even the one I never use often). By the way, my old e-reader was the Bebook One

Well, here is what I need.

First of all: I don't need a touchscreen, but I guess nowadays, most e-readers have one.

The most important file format for me is epub, but the more it supports, the better. (but as you may have already realized: no Kindle)

I can connect my current e-reader to a computer and use it like another drive. I can create or delete the folders and move the files in and out. I don't like it when I need to use a software like itunes or something like that. So I want exactly the same. And I want to use folders - lots of them. Right now I have folders like: youth books --> classics --> Jules Verne ....

Another thing that really concerns me: I once downloaded an epub reader to my smartphone and uploaded an epub that I created. All the formatting was gone. All the justified style, center style, all that stuff was gone (even though my epub file was valid). You should expect that a full e-reader does it better, but you never know nowadays ...

What is also very important: I want a reader with card-reader. So if for some reasons, the e-reader breaks, I still have access to the ebooks. And it wouldn't be bad if the battery can be changed, in case it breaks.

Of course, I already looked at some of the current e-readers. A german computer magazine recently tested 8 e-readers, and the winner of the test was the Pocketbook Touch. The runner-up was the Sony PRS-T1, the 3rd place was the Kobo ereader touch edition.

Do you think one of this (especially the Pocketbook) would be a good device for me?

Why would you need an SD card to save your books when you can store them on your computer?

I would say availability in your country, the ease of getting repairs or returning would be important. Can you buy your reader in a bricks and mortar store or only online? This becomes important if you don't like or have a problem with the model you buy... I can't imagine being several weeks without my reader in the event that a problem occurs!
I can't speak about the Pocketbook never having used one but I like both the Kobo and the Sony. I actually prefer my Sony for the user interface and having the choice between using physical buttons and touch screen. The Kobo only has a home button. But that said, the Kobo is a good reader and less expensive if cost is a factor.
PS: you really should look into using Calibre to manage your books/collections!

If this is important then neither the Kobo or Sony are for you as neither supports this.

As far as I know the Pocketbook does, but maybe someone else can confirm that. Another brand that supports folders would be Bookeen (CyBook), not sure if the newer BeBooks do or not.

Multiple SubFolder support seems like a basic feature that most readers "should" support it.

I know my old dusty Aluratek Libre(aka Jetbook) had it and upon buying Iriver Story HD, I found out that it has this basic feature too. In fact, all I had to do was take the SD card out of Aluratek and put it into Iriver and I was all set with all my books.

So, if you can get your hands on Iriver Story HD for less than $100 I would say go for it. It was sold in US Targets for $49 in a blow out sale. The screen is awesome and it has a speedy processor.

As the OP said touch screen is not a must.

You'd think so, yes. But no. Sonys don't natively support folders; they sort by title, author, and date loaded--and categories/tags added through their software or Calibre. The PRS+ firmware hack allows Sonys to have folders, but I don't believe it works on the T1.

I don't know anything about how the Kobo works, but it doesn't surprise me that folders aren't part of it--the readers that expect users to download directly from their store with no computer interface, don't need folders; most users never see the internal folder structure.

Because they don't. Out of the box anyways. I don't hack & root & all that stuff so maybe if the OP is into that & it's an option but out of the box they don't do folders & subfolders.

I should have said: the only option on the OP's shortlist. Sony and Kobo do not have folder support.
There are of course other readers that do have folder support but were not on the OP's shortlist. E.g. all Onyx models.

I'm pretty sure Sony has Collections, and the Kobo Touch has them built in but not officially available, you can activate them with a plug-in available in the Kobo sub forum.

Exactly, they have collections, not folders. One important difference between the two systems is that you can have folders within folders, but you cannot have collections within collections. The OP asks for support for folders within folders.

From reading your post.. it would see the pocketbook is best for your needs.. Is there a store to try it out. I am not familiar with that model in the US. it is more common to see kindle, nook and sony.

Kindle - no epub

As for folders.. which are nice to manage.. I really prefer the flexibility of Calibre!

Personally, I would and did say the Sony and barring that I would go with the nook Tabletwhich is notmentioned. Regardless the reader, I rely on Calibre to manage my 6k+ ebooks.

The OP is in Germany so a Nook Tablet is not a good idea. It would not be covered by a Warranty and it can be challenging to get one to Germany.

I think I decided on the Pocketbook. I was already biased to it, after I saw a test of a few ebook-readers in a german computer mag, where the PB Touch beat the competition. The Sony PRS-T1 was 2nd, Kobo was 3rd.

Also, I saw a few interesting posts here (especially in the german part of MR).

I am really looking forward to it. I will order it soon. Right now it is sold out and should be back in store in early June, by then I also should have the money together.
