Fonts in update 1.1.2
Hello there, I am new to these forums and new to the Simple Touch. I've been using a Sony PRS-505 for the last 2 years.
I've bought 2 NST and they came with version 1.0.0 which was pretty cool, page turnings weren't the fastest but the fonts were really dark, and even though they were a little fuzzy if i looked very close, they were great, and they stayed dark after 4-5 no-hard-refresh page turns. After updating directly to 1.1.2 from BN site both of my readers now have faster page turns, but the letters aren't black any more, only on the first and maybe the second page after hard refresh. They begin to wash out and thin out, and after every no-hard-refresh page turn it gets worse. It really bugs me out because it's so noticeable and it takes away from the quality of the reading. Did any of you notice this. I understood that 1.1.0 update had the Best Text technology and everyone was happy with it, did 1.1.2 update not include this? Any advice? Thank you. I did not notice any degradation of text after doing the update to 1.1.2. I do notice that sometimes the text gets kind of ragged looking, but it seems inconsistent - I mean I don't see it in any predictable pattern (like say after the 3rd screen after a refresh). And it has always been that way, as far as I can tell. Sorry.

Thank you for the reply, i'll try to post pictures later with the pages right after hard refresh and after a few no-refresh page turns. It's very visible to me, and i would say that your characterisation is right, the letters do get raggedy-looking.

You don't have to post pictures, at least for me. I know exactly what you mean. But what I was trying to say is that it has always been that way, IMHO. In other words, the latest update did not make it any worse, as far as I can see.
There were a lot of threads on this topic awhile ago, some wishing that you could pick the refresh timing (e.g. after each page turn, every 2, etc). |

Oh, ok so I guess this happens to everyone then. I was confused because I read the posts about 1.1.0 update, how much blacker and bolder the text was, but I found it was better in 1.0.0. I really hope they introduce the choice of when to refresh like they did with kindle and kobo. Thank you for the reply, i'll look for those threads.

sonytzu,
It's possible to rollback the software version to the one that originally came with your Nook. It's sort of a pain to do it, but I've done it successfully several times. I finally decided that I did like 1.1.2, so I stopped playing the rollback game. |

Hi Marty, I'm getting used to it now, but i think if it's such a pain to roll back the software, i might as well try rooting it and just read with coolreader where i understand you can set after how many pages to refresh. I'm not very good with computers though and the few easy guides i've found don't really address the million problems that can come up, like sd card formatting problems etc.
I chose the Nook over the Sony because of how well it ran after rooting and how stable it was, and i wanted to be able to read some educational books i have in chm format and pdf, but it seems i'm no good with it. ![]() |

Hi sonytzu,
You're right, even with a firmware rollback, the refesh rate is fixed, not adjustable. I haven't tried rooting it. After a while, I started focusing on just reading and any concerns about fonts and refresh rates have gone away. The NST definitely has some quirks, but I can live with them. |

Yeah, i can live with them too, especially since i bought my NST for 69 USD, and my Sony was about 300 two years ago. I loved that reader though, too bad the battery is almost gone (still can read a medium book on it before recharging though) and i'm too chicken to change it.
