ePub Error Messages and How to Fix
I have created an ePub using Indesign 5.5. I exported to ePub format and ran it through ePub Checker and I get two error messages and can;t figure out what to do to fix them:
Chile.epub/OEBPS/ChileTrivia-ePUB2.html: file is over 300k in size. Chile.epub/OEBPS/content.opf(5): Entity 'apos' is undeclared I can't find anything about what to do to fix these and I cant find anything in Sigil or TextWrangler to fix. Can anyone help?????? |

Use Sigil to fix the over 300k problem. That means your XML is too large. Split it at the chapters.

The second error is the fact that you nave a entity in the .opf file & apos; (the & belongs next to the letter) in the opf file. It is not a good idea to try and use these sorts of enities in the opf file. You can directly edit the opf if you wish and fix it but using a ' mark instead but Sigil may also fix this one for you. (An ePub is really just a bunch of file in a zip file with a different extension. You can open the file with something like 7zip and then extract and edit the bad files directly and then put them back in the zip file.)

But don't extract minetype and META-INF as you will then botch the structure of the ePub. Leave those two alone and when you put back the rest of the files, the structure won't be an issue.

You can break the document up by chapter using InDesign. You don't need Sigil to do it. Use the "Break Document at Paragraph Style check box on the Contents tab of the EPUB Export dialog box. Select the paragraph style you are using for your chapter headings.
As to the second error, did you name your cover (or some other file) with an apostrophe? If so, rename the file without the apostrophe. That should do it. |

In general, avoid all special characters in filenames. Stick to (latin) letters and numbers.
