Free kindle and nook
I think eventually we will see both Amazon and Barns and Nobel giving away free Kindles and Nooks with a signed contract committing us the reader to a certain number of books to buy from that store per year. What do you think of this sort of program? Do you think this sort of program will come to pass? I think that if amazon and/or barns and Nobel offered this sort of deal, I might be inclined to partake, with all of the books that I read per year I do not think that it would be hard for me to reach a goal. What is your opinion?

Wouldn't surprise me in the least to see a Kindle given away with "Prime" membership.
PLEASE, JB - could you at least make an effort to spell the names of well-known bookstores correctly? It really bugs me ![]() |

Audible did such a thing with audio players, and now Amazon owns them. Third parties, like the New York Times already do the equivalent of give a reader away with subscription, so this would not surprise me at all.
I'd have to see the details of such a deal to see if I would be interested of course. |

It would have to be with a contract to spend a certain amount. With $.99 and free books making it simply a number of books wouldn't work.
I'm amazed at the people who get three or four new Kindles in a short period of time. If all replacements were free I can't imagine the abuse and imaginary problems. |

I suspect it would be the reverse. People's perceived value of the Kindle would zero and they would be less likely to complain. If somebody gives you a Kindle you are less likely to complain about the background being the "wrong" shade of grey than you would be if you fronted $79 or more for it.

My hubby was just telling me that Microsoft did similar with Xbox. Buy the unit for $99 only when you get a 2 year sub to their Xbox live.

I can maybe see this coming once the Agency model breaks down and Amazon is free to set book prices again. Then perhaps you would pay $9.95 a month each month for 12 months, you'd get a credit good for one book per month, and a free Kindle up front.

I wouldn't mind seeing something like this come along. I know a few people who would probably jump all over it if it did happen like that.
Heck, I'd probably grab another one just because. Getting the Kindle/Nook up front, then buying a book a month off of some list would be fine with me. |

I doubt I'd be interested. I just paid $49 for a new Kindle and the only books I buy are the $1 KSO offers. The rest I get from public domain or the library. In the long run, my way of doing it will more than likely be cheaper.

If Amazon offered a free Kindle for new Amazon Prime members, that would be enough incentive for me to sign up. As it is now, the two-day shipping, limited choice of free videos, and one book borrow per month don't entice me, but a free Kindle would! I'd probably give it to a family member.
If the program would require that you buy a certain number of books per year to get a free Kindle, then no. I get most of my ebooks for free or I borrow from the library. |

How about a model similar to some subscription music sites? You get a free Kindle, then pay $9.95 a month and you can read whatever you like? You don't own the books, but you can read whatever you like, whenever you like as long as you keep paying the subscription.

It wouldn't surprise me if this would happen.
But I withdrew my membership from my book club exactly because I had to buy a book every x months. It bothered me because I'd think about buying a book and go "Oh, but I already bought a book for this semester. And maybe none of the new releases will interest me in the semester." And I'd tell myself that I'd get the aforementioned book the next semester. It felt like I was buying one book a semester because I had to not because I wanted to read them. In fact, some of my book club books are just gathering dust. (I did want to read them when I ordered them though...) I didn't enjoy the books I bought and I didn't have the freedom to buy books whenever I wanted to. (Though I got good discounts from the club, especially on the hardcovers.) So if Amazon or B&N did this, I wouldn't care much for it. That and most of my ebooks were free. |
