Amazon's new Send to Kindle

I tried the search "send to kindle" in this forum, and I only found random mentions of Amazon's Send to Kindle. It does merit a special mention, as I find it extremely useful.

If you are using Calibre then you can click on Click to open and you are immediately in the folder containing the file. A rightclick on the file and you can send it to Amazon.

While I find Send to Kindle quite useful, I don't recommend the method you mention.

Calibre does not update the metadata in the actual book files that it has in its folder tree. If you have modified any metadata (title, author, ...) after the book was last converted then using your method will send a book without the metadata updates.

It is preferable to either use calibre's own email functions or use Send to Disk using Send to Kindle with that output file. When using either of these methods, calibre updates the metadata in the ebook file itself.

I believe if you change a cover on a mobi book, the Calibre email feature will not email a file with the new cover, unless you first do a mobi-to-mobi conversion.

Is other metadata handled differently?

Yes. It's only when you change the cover that you need to do a re-conversion; any other metadata change is dynamically applied when the book is exported from Calibre in any way: save to disk, send to device, or e-mail.

I tried this:

I had an epub converted to mobi, and sent it using my method. The new cover I had selected did not appear on my devices (iPad and Kindle Keyboard).

I then deleted the book on my devices and at Amazon, and the mobi edition in Calibre too.

A new conversion sent to Amazon using email via Calibre. Now the new cover appeared in the Kindle application on my iPad, but not on my Kindle

I always check the conversion using the old mobipocket reader. The first time it showed the original cover, but the next time it did show the new one.
So maybe it is enough to postpone the conversion till all the metadata has been changed?

Thank you for that information

I very seldom (never) change any other internal metadata than the cover. (By internal I mean the stuff that goes with the book itself)
