What is next?? after prs T1

I have used the sony readers for a while.. i like em.. I don't keep them forever as the minor improvements make the upgrade worthwhile. I figure 1 or two years usage is okay.. prs600 now prs350.. I don't really like the kindle interface - but that is another topic!

What is next after the Sony PRS T1?? My PRS is rock solid (minus the chipping plastic on the bezel -- makes the support mounts weak for the cover) but otherwise it has served me well!

wifi is a nice. I use it occasionally for the two other k3 in the house to transfer books.

What does the users here think the next big thing the sony ereaders will offer?
speed?
higher resolution?

I think it is almost time for a new prs model to debut.. most likely by the fall.
Thoughts?

If they deal with the shiny bezel I think they should just take what they learned with the T1 and keep improving the android based reader. There is a thread (T2 wishes) from about a week ago that suggested ways of improving the T1 most of the answers were pretty realistic and doable.

If they fixed all that stuff there is no doubt the T2 or whatever they name it would be the best ereader bar none.

I'll not be buying the next one though because I'm happy with my T1 for at least another year or two barring any mishaps.

yep

I agree.
1. fix the current T-1 (software enhancements... end user refinements)
2. faster processor
3. higher resolution.
4. matte vs shiny bezel.

I don't know the history of the processors but with android being the base os for the reader, the fixes / enhancements are probably easier to do.

Tough call.. i wonder if Sony will have a major revision or just incremental.. wait til oct to find out.

Maybe Sony will now re-introduce edge lighting. As far as I know they were the first to bring it to eInk readers. But that was before they introduced ir touch. The extra layer for touch was reflective and for that reason the lighting was problematic.

Now they could do it without that problem. I resisted buying an eInk reader for a long time because I like to read in bed and do not like external lights. I use my Rocket eBook or the eBookwise reader for reading in bed.

Honestly, I think they could make my T1 feel like a T2 if they did a firmware update. At least in terms of fixing buggy software. I'd like to feel Sony still cares about this reader.

I'm not sure people want a dedicated ereader that much as time wears on. Personally I do but I think the zeitgeist of of these gadgets is heading towards color, game playing capability, music, and other media. Either that or a dedicated ereader that is of a much more durable technology than what any of these gadgets have so far. They're so fragile and easily broken. That will inevitably change in the next couple of years.

I would be surprised if Sony's engineers spend any more time on the T1. I wish they would, but history suggests this is not happening. The 950 could have been tweaked further as well.

Ken, I am not aware of any way my 950 might need tweaking. What are you referring to?

@Pete

Landscape mode for the browser comes to mind. The T1 has this. For an ereader of its screen size, I am still dumbfounded that the browser could not be oriented to landscape like the 950's other reading functions. I thought surely they would release firmware to fix this.

Ken, Interesting! That's a feature I cannot envision myself ever using.

I love my 950... but it could use some tweaking.

For example, more font size choices, different fonts, tap to turn page as an option and solve the freezing related to auto-delivery (where you can't turn pages while auto-delivery is starting... a rare, but annoying and never-addressed, bug). All the slowdowns related to having too many notes or too many books are also shameful. I was hoping they would improve on the x50 series, instead we got a new product, solving some of these issues, but lacking in other departments (what's with the lack of auto-delivery on the T1, for example? and I would buy a T1 if it only had 3g...).

Then again, we have PRS+, which addresses most of those concerns for the x50s.

I only use the basic features of the 950; thus, I never have any of the issues that are being mentioned here. Certainly haven't modified the Sony firmware or software.

I don't even know what auto-delivery is (but I suspect it has to do with subscriptions).

Tapping for page turns might be nice but since I've never had it, I don't miss it.

I keep the load on my 950 very low so I have NEVER had any slow downs.

The only anomaly I have experienced was a sequence where my battery indicator showed quick discharges. I called Sony Support and they informed me how to remedy the issue; thus far, it has not recurred.

I imagine that an integrated light may be in the cards for the next Sony reader, and I can imagine 3g being added as well, as there is a model in Japan (the PRS-G1) that looks just like the T1 but has added 3g. I can see a faster processor and longer battery life being added as well. I personally would like to see that ability to add more fonts (like the Kobo touch) and perhaps the ability to adjust line spacing. I also miss the .lrf format, and would love to see that returned. As it is, though, I'm very happy with my T1.

950 by itself is a beautiful device with flaws, PRS+ makes it almost perfect. The biggest difference to me is being able to use your own fonts. The default fonts Sony used to use pre-T1 are *Horrible.* It looks so spindly and hard to read compared to bolder fonts similar to Caecilia/Amasis.
