Does micro sd speed matter?
I am wondering if it matters how fast a micro sd card I get. I plan to store ebooks and perhaps audio books on it.
Thanks |

For most readers, the difference in card speed will be negligible.
The first time you transfer a large library, the difference in speed will be noticeable, but not significant (ie. to transfer 100 books it might take 20 seconds instead of 5). In day to day usage, it will not even be noticeable. |

Generally speaking, the slower SD cards--Class 6 and below--work better with eBook readers than the faster ones designed for cameras, and they cost less.

For ebooks and the occasional audiobook... You'll be fine with "slower" cards.

You may very well notice that audiobooks take a bit longer to open because they tend to be larger than ebooks. There is a trend, however, toward ebooks with lots of graphics and animations. If you start getting those, then you'll probably notice a difference.

The speed of SD cards are write speeds only. Theoretically, you can buy a very fast class 10 SD card and it may read slower than a slower rated card. Personally, I wouldn't worry about speed ratings at all, even if you are putting large files on your reader. Speed ratings are most relevant for cameras and videorecorders, devices that write large amounts of data .

From reading the cellphone/tablet forums, I get the feeling that the faster the card is the less stable it is. In fact I've read posts that indicate a class 6 or 10 card would not work in a particular phone, but a class 2 or 4 card worked just fine.

I agree with most posters that, especially on eReaders, class is not a big factor and I would go with class 2 or 4 unless you find a good deal. |
