Nesbo ? Is it me ?

I've just finished Jo Nesbo's "Headhunters" , and have to confess, I found really clunky, rather boring, and, as the first I've read, not what I was expecting...
I just found it not very written or constructed.
Only finished it out of duty really.

Is it the translation perhaps, or am I just not on the right wavelength ?

I absolutely love Henning by the way, and I suppose was expected something as accomplished ?

Headhunters is the only Nesbo book I've never read. I think I'm right in saying it's not a Harry Hole book? I have read all the Harry Hole series of books and really enjoyed them. I think Redbreast was the first in the series, maybe you could try that? If you don't enjoy that, then maybe Nesbo's not your kind of thing.

Who's Henning by the way?

Henning Mankell, of Wallander, I'd guess?

Redbreast is the third Harry Hole book, but the first one currently available in English. That's kind of put me off starting it, since I like to get in at the beginning, if I can.

Edit: I seem to remember that they were pushing Nesbo as "the new Stieg Larsson", here, which just made me wonder why, given that he'd been writing longer, he wasn't the old Stieg Larsson.

Headhunter was the first Nesbö I read. I hated it and it totally put me off trying anything else.
Many have assured me that Headhunter is not representative for his writing. I have since, because of that, read a couple of Harry Hole books. I'm not crazy about them either, but they are certainly a lot better than Headhunter!

Maybe a book about fart powder that sends you to outer space would be more to your taste?

I am not making this up, it's by Jo Nesbo:

I have tried reading several Harry Hole novels - but just can't finish them - and I'm a huge fan of Scandinavian mysteries. Not sure if it's the translation or just the writing style ....

I liked listening to the first two Harry Hole books (not translated to English).

Read Rødstrupe (Redbreast) - meh. Listen to Sorgenfri (Nemesis), but didn't like it, and gave up halfway through (partly because of Tom Waaler). Haven't felt like going back to the series yet.

The two first books are set in Australia and Bangkok, and Hole is out on his own, working with the local police. Maybe this is why they worked better for me. In the others I found most people, and their actions irritating

No, alas - but I tried......

Well, whether it's me, the writer, or the translator, I'm beyond redemption, obviously - tried "Redbreast" , a bit "better" but didn't finish it, and have come to the scientific conclusion that I would rather eat worms than tackle any more.....
Back to Henning (yes, Mankell) who is excelent - for whatever reason.
