Breaking Connections between Calibre Library and New Computer
Hello:
My name is Sherilyn and this is my first post. I have owned a Kobo since it was first available in Canada--I am a very satisfied customer. I have always used Calibre and love it. However, after my Kobo is linked to my calibre library, I continually lose connections when I purchased a new computer, or my computer was sent away for repairs. Calibre will not recognize my files created with my former computer. Of course, I do not lose my original data. I have 1,000 plus ebooks in my Calibre library and what I lose is all the work I put into with adding tags, covers, series, metaldata, and so on. This means that I always have to go back to square one and format the 1,000 plus ebooks again. What am I doing wrong? I am sure others may have experienced this difficulty. Thank you for your anticipated assistance. dojspalm Last edited by dojspalm; 04-04-2012 at 08:10 AM. |

You'll have much better help in the calibre forum (a bit lower down the main forum page) but the gist of it is :
- Calibre stores your metadata (data about the data) in its database and only writes it to files when you actually 'write' files (by copying your library, converting books, ...). And then only for file formats that accept metadata (epub, which you probably use, DOES). What you can do : a) Once in a while, do a disc write (or disc save? my calibre is in french) of your library to some other "backup" folder on the drive. b) Use the 'Modify epub' plugin (preference->get new extension modules) to "update metadata" on the files you just finished filling out with interesting data. ..there are probably other ways I just don't remember right now. The Calibre sub-forum, as I said above, will be full of helping soulds. |

If you're on Linux, there's a folder in your /home called Calibre Library. I always back it up before reformatting.
Dunno for the Mac or Windows. I'm sure there's a similar folder somewhere. |

We have a calibre forum, where your question will be better placed.
This thread has been moved to that forum. Don (Moderator) |
