New Nook Touch this spring?
There are rumors about a new Nook Touch soon. The rumor is that it will contain a light source--very interesting technology. This link contains a link to a video where the technology is displayed. The video is from Dec so it's possible that that technology is now inside a new Nook and ready to go.
http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/201...night-reading/ I've mixed feelings. I don't read too much in the dark so I probably won't buy one. But I do hope this means they have updated the software to make things like the shelves work better. |

That's cool. I mean, it's not worth buying a new ereader for, but a backlit screen could be a good addition. If I'm reading in the dark (usually in bed while my wife is sleeping), I switch over to my iPod touch, which is fine for reading on in small increments.

Thanks, I think that'd be great. I find myself using the NookColor in some situations where ambient light is low, but I would rather use an eInk device with light instead, I much prefer reading on eInk.

This is NOT backlit. It's front lit. Much easier on the eyes.

The anonymous commenter that made the comment the article is based on (or someone pretending to be him/her) posted another comment to say they weren't serious. So while the new Nook may have lighting, it's just speculation at this point, from what I've seen.

It would be nice, especially if it works well. I wouldn't jump on one, but I'd certainly, eventually upgrade to one. I just hope that isn't the only thing that B&N would be adding for a "new Nook ST". I'd hope either processor improvements, storage space or to me most importantly, improved eink screen. I haven't heard much out of eInk, but it'd be nice to step up to a 768x1024 resolution 6 inch display. That would pretty much eliminate the last of any "pixelation" you see unless you want to hold it RIGHT up to your face. eInk doesn't have pixelation like a typical display, but you can still see if you hold it up close (barely closer then normal comfortable reading distance for me).
Better or as good as increased resolution would be higher contrast and more contrast steps, say a full 16 or maybe 32 or more (heck 256 shades would be A-mazing, but I'll simply settle for twice as many grey levels and 20-30% better contrast). |

Well, it seemed like speculation based on the original article.
![]() I'm glad I was wrong. |

I went to BN last night and the "new" Nook was news to the two associates I talked to. Absolutely news to them! One of them did say that she was told there was something happening on Friday--the directive was that something was on the way and that it could not be opened until Friday.

The stores generally get the announcements not much before or at the same time as the public.
And many in the stores or blissfully unaware of the rumors and controversies flying around online. |

Oh, so maybe tomorrow there will be some fun news. If the only addition is front lighting, I'll hold off awhile. I'll want it, but just mild wistful desire for the foreseeable future. Now if there are other improvements to display, processing speed, etc without any serious hit to battery life (other than of course using the front lighting a lot will drain the battery at least somewhat faster), then I might consider upgrading sooner and either trying to gift my nook to my wife to get her to really switch to ereading, or else use my current Nook ST as a backup reader.
