Few Are Chosen
Hello everyone
Greetings from Hamgee University Press. M T McGuire here, I'm just dropping you a note to let you know that my novel, Few Are Chosen, is now available as an e-book from Smashwords and you can find it here or on Amazon; UK here, US Here. It's about a chap with eyes in the back of his head who becomes a getaway driver. Here's a more detailed blurb. The Pan of Hamgee isn’t paranoid. There must be some people in K’Barth who aren’t out to get him; it’s just that, right now, he’s not sure where they are. His family are dead, his existence is treason and he does the only thing he can to survive – getaway driving. As if being on the run isn’t bad enough, when he finds a magic thimble and decides to keep it, he unwittingly sets himself on a collision course with Lord Vernon, K’Barth’s despot ruler. Unwillingly, The Pan is forced to make choices and stand up for his beliefs – beliefs he never knew he had until they were challenged. But, faced with a stark moral dilemma will his new found integrity stick? Can he stop running? Few Are Chosen currently retails for the princely sum of 72p or 99c but I may put the price back up at the end of January 11. Here are some reviews... OK, I'm embarrassed to say this but I've never read any Robert Rankin and now, looking at some of the information about him on 'Ye Internette' I'm wondering why the hell not! I suspect our aims are not so far apart but to my chagrin, I also suspect he's a lot funnier than I am. Bugger.
Thank you ;-) Cheers MTM |

So, I read anything that looks interesting - for the most part stuff I buy second hand or borrow from the Library and when I worked I used to borrow lots of books from Lost Property (it is truly amazing how many people leave books on the bus). I do like Narnia/Harry Potter type books, the ones that are supposed to be for kids but actually appeal to adults. I also have to admit that since my son was born, two years ago I have only managed to read about 6 books; Nation and Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett, A spot of bother by Mark Haddon and Juliette, Naked and Slam by Nick Hornby... oh yeh and my own about 17 times. It's why I keep rather low profile about reviews and feedback... because as a full-time parent, I simply don't have time to read other peoples' stuff properly and write (and writing is the one intellectual outlet I have left and it keeps me sane). When junior starts nursery I am hoping things will change ;-) I am certainly going to put Robert Rankin on my list if only because I find Penge as inately humorous as he does. cheers MTM |

Here's an update. You can download Unlucky Dip, a free short to go with Few Are Chosen on smashwords or feedbooks. It's about some of the characters in Few Are Chosen a kind of try before you buy, only with knobs on. You can find it on Feedbooks here and on Smashwords here.
Anyway, enjoy. I will be putting the price of the novel up to £2.99 through all outlets next Saturday so you still have a week to download it cheap. Cheers MTM Last edited by M T McGuire; 01-16-2011 at 04:43 PM. |

I give them the same ratings films have - which seemed like a good idea at the time because it's less specific than the stupid age banding thing they do for books which really gets on my wick.
So, a U rating is for Universal - the way I thought the classification system was. Bum! It's clearly not is it. Sorry about that. Anyway, U means anyone can watch it. PG means parental guidance ie somebody might swear and there's a bit of violence here and there. The free story is U, the novel is PG. Cheers MTM Last edited by M T McGuire; 01-17-2011 at 05:09 PM. |

oh, okay. I had a feeling it was something like that but couldn't figure out what U could be.
What is this age banding thing? |

If you try to sell a book to agents and co over here, they all want to know whether it's for 8 - 11, or Young Adult or for adults. You're not really allowed to fit into more than one of these groups, even though people do. Actually the Harry Potter books were officially aimed at 8 - 11. It seemed to take a while for the publishing house to accept that adults read it and start publishing the 'adult' cover.
I think, to be honest, it's just another thing agents and publishers use as an excuse to say 'no' if your book doesn't ring their bells enough. But for us authors it's yet another hurdle. Philip Pullman, another author who writes at a type of person rather than an age range, hates it and is part of a campaign against it. You'll guess, from this, that Few Are Chosen doesn't fit neatly into a specific age range! ;-) Cheers MTM |

Here's a quick update...
I've decided to give the pdf format of my novel away for free. You can download it from my website here . If you decide to give it a go I'd be very interested to know what you think. If you want other formats of the book there is a charge but it's only small: You can find it in pretty much any format you like on Smashwords here. Alternatively, if you have turned to the dark side you can find it on Amazon. For UK Amazon click here. For US Amazon click here. Cheers MTM |
