eink notepads
This is slightly off topic but are there any kindle sized eink notepads that can be written on with a stylus and erased with the other end of the stylus?: I am constantly writing to do lists and instead of going through pads of paper a small eink pad would work better. I don't like to type with a keyboard so it would need to use a stylus.

no.
but there is the Boogie Board. http://www.improvelectronics.com/us/en/ its a writing/ drawing tablet using a one pixel pressure sensitive ch-lcd that is bistable. which means you use a stylus( or your finger etc) to write on it and it stays until you erase it with button push. there is no memory yet ( a next gen model is in development that would have memory) to save items and even if there were you couldnt call them back on to the display because its one giant pixel. when you erase you erase the whole thing. they just released 2 new models this past week. the new ones are the 10 inch model that comes with a lock out for the erase button- which will certainly come in handy if you write your grocery list on it and happen to push the erase button getting out of the car at the store ![]() the other has an extra wide enclosure with holes for using in a binder. the 8" is the original model, we have one for our notes and one for the boys to draw on etc. They just came out with a sort of bulletin board / cork board accessory for hanging it up. Brookstone is supposed to get some of the 8 inch ones in a new case design in a multiple of colors |

Actually, there is. It's the Entourage Pocket Edge and Entourage Edge. It has a tablet on one side, and an eink notebook on the other. Sadly, these have just been discontinued, although you can still find a few leftovers here and there.

But any new ereader with wacom stylus is $250 or more. And there are others still available like the Onyx Boox A60 X60 and M90, PocketBook 603 and 903. Hanvon's various models in 5", 6" and 9.7" including their new color eink device. they just aren't simple cheap notepads. |

I've been waiting for something like this for years; I need one that will save meeting notes in PDF that can be uploaded or emailed to a PC. I attend a lot of meetings on a lot of different topics, and either have to have a mishmash of subjects in one notebook, or have a lot of different notebooks.
The best solution so far has been a LiveScribe smartpen, but that also has its limitations, most notably it needs expensive special paper. Oh, yes! A built in voice recorder that supports mp3 would be nice too. The LiveScribe has one, but it outputs HUGE .wav files, and doesn’t natively support compression, so I have to convert them to .mp3 in order to get small enough files to email. |

@Wodin: Are you using the newer Echo? Is the integration with EverNote and, more recently, Google Docs, etc., of any use to you?

Yes, I have an Echo 8GB, and yes the "Connect" feature works well, except that the files are so big that sending them over my 3G wireless connection not only eats up my bandwidth, but takes forever to send. The audio for a 1 hour meeting runs well over 100 MB, and I sit in a lot of 1 hour or longer meetings.
The best enhancement that LiveScribe could make would be to implement some serious compression technology. |

I find it odd that no one has mentioned the ASUS EA800.

Probably because it's a little more (and therefore a little more expensive than) simply an electronic notebook. If someone really did just want to write checklists, a Boogie Board probably makes more sense.
But I totally agree that the Asus Eee Note is perhaps the only under $300 device right now that's intended to be a writer first, and reader second, and if the OP wanted to save those notes, and/or store ebooks or have a basic wifi connection, that's what I'd recommend looking into. There's also the need to be at least a little bit comfortable modding it, as most devices right now display a Chinese language and need to be converted to English. And the fact that it's not really selling outside of Taiwan, and even most eBay devices will originate from there. (Just adds to shipping expenses, difficulty dealing with returns, transit times, customs/duty...) I'm having my sis negotiate a private sale of one local to her, and hope to have one soon! ![]() |

There is also the Note Slate, though recently I'm beginning to wonder if we'll ever see it ... or if it's just vaporware. It was supposed to be revealed in June, but no changes yet.
I truly hope it comes to be! Because, for what it does (take/save notes only) for only $99 (USD), I want one so badly! Badly enough that I just can't delete the bookmark. It's such a wonderful concept... And, now that you know about it, now you too can hope it becomes real. Maybe it'll be like fairies - if enough people believe, it'll be true. ![]() Marilyn |
