Cheap (Kindle): Zendegi by Greg Egan $0.01

I've had Greg Egan's Clockwork Rocket on my radar for a while, and while checking it out on Amazon noticed another of his books, Zendegi, for $0.01. No idea how long this price is good for.

It's been a penny for months, after being free for months before (original date July 28, 2011 Kindle, July 22 nook).

How does a book get to be one cent on Amazon? Was it two cents somewhere and they wanted to undercut, or...?

I bought it, just because I want to see a one cent charge on my credit card.

If I were a publisher, I might charge $0.01 for my "freebies." That way, it can (hopefully) shoot up the PAID charts. Then when the promotion period is over, people will still see my book in the paid charts for a little while, and think it must be worth $9.99 or whatever.

I always wondered why more pubs didn't try this strategy, until yesterday I hadn't really seen $0.01 books.

Either it is a price match to somewhere else, or (since this one isn't self-published), it is either amazon or the publisher that made an input error on the pricing.

I've had a few (my card at amazon doesn't care).

Be sure not to buy anything else for several hours - Amazon is now grouping Kindle purchases, just like with MP3's.

That strategy doesn't seem to be working with this book.

Many of the Kindle Daily Deal books (priced at $0.99 or $1.99) do seem to climb nicely onto the first page of the paid Kindle Bestseller list though. If they back that up with Amazon Prime Lending that keeps them there longer, since borrows are counted as sales by Amazon's algorithm.
