Wow! Fast reading on Kindle.

OK....I'm a total noob when it comes to Kindle (and eBooks in general). I got my Kindle about 2 weeks ago, but had only slowly been going through a (non-fiction) audio book. I had not really "read" on it yet.

I started "reading" my first book yesterday. Wow....the ease on eyes is same as a book, but without the awkward holding that a book has. I found myself reading about 1.5X faster (at least). This was a nice little bonus I wasn't expecting.

Congrats on the new Kindle! It's great for people that have a hard time holding a book, myself included

Congrats on the purchase. I'm in the same boat as yourself only my "awakening" happened 2 years ago. I didn't think ereaders were that big a deal when they first came out and I scoffed at them until I got my Kindle. I'm totally sold on them now and can't even think about going back to normal print books.

I find e-ink reading to be much more enjoyable than paper books. The adjustable type is easy on the eyes, the non-glare screen is great, and it's a joy not to have to bend the book open while reading! Hardback books seem so heavy and bulky now.

Glad you're enjoying the experience too, kingtermite!

When I jumped into the Kindle, I found myself reading books a bit faster too. I don't know why or if I could even really find a way to test it, but that's just how it seemed. Maybe it was the novelty of NOT having to lug around an entire book, find a way to comfortably hold it, and take the time to turn each page after finishing... I don't know.

I enjoy reading, so I'm glad that the Kindle makes it easier to do.

I think I read faster on my Kindle too, it just seems easier on the eye, as well as being more comfortable to hold.

It's a cunning plan - the Kindle is easy and comfortable to use, so you read faster, so you finish books faster, so you have to buy more books.

I have to agree that reading is much more pleasurable and I have always read quite a bit! I have a K3 and Touch and enjoy reading on both. I fought the Kindle tooth and nail for quite a while before I finally gave in 2010. I am very pleased with the decision.

I read more on the Kindle, partly because it's so easy to queue up the next book. Before the Kindle I got most of my books from the library which involved some pre-planning and effort.

Which Kindle would you guys recommend? I'm using my Fire for reading atm and it seems fine, was wondering if a Touch would improve my reading capabilities

It's totally up to you, of course, but I do not like reading on my Fire. I do not like reading on a back-lit LCD. I like eInk. I also do not like using a touch screen on a reader. I don't like fingerprints on the screen, but mostly I don't like turning pages with a touch screen because I find it very bad ergonomically.
I like my KK, because I just rest my thumb on the page button, in holding position, and I don't have to move to turn pages, just slightly increase pressure.

I love my Fire as a tablet, but not as a reader.
My wife, on the other hand, loves reading on the Fire. She sold her K2 a while back in favor of reading on LCD, multi-purposes devices.

There are, as you might suspect, many threads discussing these issues in depth here. You should search the forums.

ApK hit the nail on the head. I think the non back-lit screen is the biggest feature that sets the Kindle (not Kindle Fire) apart from all other e-readers. You don't necessarily notice it but the back-lit screen stresses your eyes more so its harder to read for longer periods of time.

I love the Kindle, but you DO realize that there are a bunch of other readers that use the same eink screen, right?
Nook, Kobo, Sony, etc.
And there are also some that use non-back-lit reflective LCDs.

No I didn't realize that. I've not looked at all the ebooks mentioned from this site. I got a Kindle because I thought it was the only non backlit book reader.

That being said, I did fiddle with a Sony book reader once because my dad and his wife got one free from something. It was horrible. I'm a tech savvy guy, and it took me 1/2 hour to figure out how to get an ebook from the library on to it WITH INSTRUCTIONS. The interface and user friendliness of the Sony reader were HORRIBLE.
