Daily random rebooting (K3/3G)
Hi, you may remember me posting about my K3/3G w/so last month. I couldn't find the old thread or I would have posted to it. Basically the Kindle was rebooting randomly at least once a day. After consulting with Kindle CS, I received a replacement.
Well the replacement is doing the SAME thing. I have never placed this one in my Amazon lighted cover. It has never been handled by anyone but me. I have less than 500 items on it (including collection titles, calender, 2 note apps, one or two games, which I have not played). It will reboot while in sleep mode (I know b/c of Archived Items (0) ). It will reboot while I am reading something. I usually keep it fully charged, never below 75%. It just suddenly freezes and reboots! I haven't even put anything new on it in the last 10 days, except for my daily news from Calibre, and Amazon Daily Blog, which I read and delete. There is nothing waiting for indexing. So if this was yours, would you contact Kindle CS for another replacement? |

No, I'd suspect corrupt content. None of my Kindles has EVER rebooted.
I'd suggest doing a Factory Reset (which will erase all your content), then SLOWLY add back your content until it starts rebooting again. I strongly suspect that you have one specific book or app on there that's causing the problem. |

Ok, Harry, I will do that, after I copy my Calendar content to my other Kindle.
Thanks, I'd rather do that then mess with getting a replacement. Not that it's hard, thanks to Amazon. |

Did it, loaded a few books, Calendar, Sticky Notes, Every word. Turned off wifi, plugged in to let it index. Just now I took a look, and Archived Items (0) again. So, I have deleted Calendar, Sticky Notes and Every word. There are 50 items. Synced up and then turned wifi off. Maybe it was one of those "active content" things causing the problem. Will find out...

Be sure to let us know just what it is that is causing the issue, if you can figure it out. I have calendar and sticky notes myself (haven't encountered the issue, but doesn't mean that I'm immune), and some other actives.
Something like this could be rather bothersome. |

So far, so good, no rebooting at all. I will update the thread again as time goes by. But I think it must be one of those active content items. I have them (and more of them) on my K3 wifi and it doesn't have this problem. Maybe it's the 3G SO model.

There was an old thread about this being caused by the official kindle cover shorting the LED booklight power contacts in the Kindle 3 side slots that the cover snaps into. Amazon had a replacement cover to fix this problem.
If you have an original amazon cover, try removing it to see if the problem goes away. If so, get a replacement for the defective cover from amazon. EDIT: I see that the problem went away, so perhaps not a cover issue, but still good to know... |

If you have more than about 3200 items in your Kindle Library, you can't make this problem go away unless you leave wireless off.
Every time it syncs, the Kindle Keyboard will reboot if you have too many items in your library (the number includes audio content and personal docs, so it's difficult to pin down the exact number). The issue doesn't seem to be as bad on the later Kindles, but even the Kindle Touch can get into a reboot of death spiral (killing battery life), although it is often helped by a Restart from the menu. What kills me is that the issue was a problem when the Kindle Keyboard originally shipped, was fixed in the first firmware release and came back in the latest release (about last summer?). Who knew that the "3500 books held" also meant some idiot in the programming staff wouldn't bother declaring a variable large enough to hold the archived book list.... |

Karen, by Kindle Library, you mean Kindle Archive, not actually what is on one's Kindle, correct?

If your online active content is larger than the kindle can hold in its index on the 30MB partition, connecting to wifi can be a bad thing. You should be able to configure that kindle to NOT sync to your amazon account in that case.

Does turning off sync affect the process of sending documents to the Kindle? I could still turn wifi on to download my news if sync is off, right?
Never mind, I tested and it worked. How odd that such a simple thing could have solved my rebooting problem. The thing that convinces me this could solve the problem is, last night I turned my other KK on to d/l a book, then turned wifi off. Not much later, my daughter was reading on it, and it went into spontaneous reboot. I have over 4000 amazon books plus hundreds of personal documents in my archives. I've had two Kindle Keyboard 3G devices over a year-and-a-half and neither has ever spontaneously rebooted—until yesterday. It had been running very slow. I checked and no books were stuck indexing. There was no static electricity in the air. The Kindle isn't in a cover. I went to look up a word in the dictionary, it wasn't responding, and then the device rebooted. I'm glad you posted. If it happens again, at least I may have some idea what's causing the problem. |

Well there goes my theory. Sync is off, wifi is on (waiting for my news to d/l) just sitting there and it rebooted.
