If you're referring to the 1913 novel by Herman Whitaker, it's in the public domain. Why not simply read it? It doesn't seem to be a particularly long book.

OT but when I was growing up in California, we lived across the street from a barranca and that's what we always called it. Now I live on the East Coast and no one has ever heard of a barranca. So I ask you: do you know the meaning of this word without looking it up?

How dull - it's a valley sort of thing.
Afraid no bananas for us, Harry.

I went into my Sony Spanish, then American dictionary, no entry found. Then I went back to Spanish, hit the Oxford English by mistake - and there it was. Strange.....

And the opus itself would appear, after 15 pages, to concern gold or copper mining in Mexico, with (so far ) a few politically incorrect references to the native inhabitants of that nation, and what seems a fairly naughty description of a young lady.

I'll have a rest afore any further research....
