File suffixes and structure

When I access my Kindle Touch via USB, I see lots of different files and folders with suffixes.

Files at the top level (in the folder Documents) seem to be .AZW, .AZW2, .MOBI, .PRC, and .TXT

Folders at the top level are mostly .SDR, though there are four (dictionaries, me again, pwright2, and unknown) with no suffixes. I think all except dictionaries were created by Calibre but I'm not sure.

Inside unknown are two files of the same prefix name but one is a .MOBI and one is .APNX. There is also a matching .SDR folder. It contains a .MBS and a .MBP1

Up at the top level again, there is an "And God Said" .AZW file and a matching .SDR folder. The folder contains a .ASC, a .MBP1, and a .MBS.

Is there anywhere a treatise on the different file names and structures used by the Kindle?

It appears that the AZW2 files are active content programs and are the only ones without matching .SDRs. And apparently file names can be very long.
