Last newb question... (lost progress)

Okay my last newb question that I have that I can't seem to find an answer to using the search function though I'm sure it's been answered many times before.

Many times when reading a book on my Fire and then I go to a different book, when I return to my previous book my progress has been lost and I have to search through the book to find where I was before. I often get the message "synch failed" and it puts me back on page 1.

What is causing this and how can I avoid it?

Thank you for your help.

Set a book mark after reading by touching the upper, right corner of the page. Then Sync.

Before starting to read, Sync again.

Shouldn't have to do that.

Is the Fire your only kindle device? If not and someone else is reading the same book that would cause

I don't get this often, but the Fire seems to work best when it is connected via WiFi. If you are off the grid, remembering the last page can be hit and miss. What I found myself doing when on travel was make a mental note of the last location number and checking that the % was updated on the home page when I exited. If not, I immediately re-opened the ebook and manually entered my remembered location. Usually this "stuck" when I exited a 2nd time.

I have not found that this location is forgotten once it has registered. So far as I know, the Fire still saves the local last read location in the .mbp file associated with each ebook - so if should be safe when you return to it. I'm not sure what it does if there is a mismatch between what Amazon's servers say and what is in the .mbp file though.

I don't have this problem. I leave WiFi off and get the sync error but it never goes back to page 1. My books always open up at the correct page too.

Actually, i've experienced a few times but I leave wifi on all the time. Not sure what happens. I have noticed that gripping the device with your thumb/finger accidentally on the the edge of the reading area can cause it to flip from your current spot all the way to the end or the beginning depending on what side of the screen you're holding. I've done that several times getting out of a chair, moving from room to room, etc.

I've had this happen a time or two, but I never really thought much about it. I've not paid attention to whether or not Wifi was on.

I imagine that it would probably be due to my K3 since I'll sometimes jump into the same book on it every now and again.

Don't have that issue either. My problem with page turning is sometimes is thinks I am swiping instead of tapping but its due to my cold fingers. I'm anemic. Now Mantano has the annoying if you tap to long 10 page forward issue but on the Kindle app I haven't had any problem with it skipping pages. I wish I could say the same on on my K4 and K3. They are always advancing too much and I am losing my place.
