Amazon 3G SIM card use
The telecommunications industry has had to deal with people who want to mis-use the
services since approximately the day after Mr. Bell decided to charge for the service. A recurring theme here is trying to make some use of the Amazon "Free 3G" serivces other than what was intended by Amazon. Since it is rare for anyone to see the view from the "provider side", I am posting four screenshots from the SIM Control application. These happen to be from the AT&T system but this control application is the most commonly used one in the industry. Common carriers other than AT&T use it by license or (very rarely) invent their own to provide the same features. The interest here is the "Automation" tab and the basic types of alerts that are provided: == Image off-line == Those are just the basic alerts, of more interest is the "Custom Business Rules": The general choices: == Image off-line == And the basic "what to do about it" choices: == Image off-line == That last choice is worth another screenshot of its own. This control center application is not only interactive, it can be accessed using an API, here is one of its tricks: == Image off-line == One of the things to keep in mind is that this is a "Real Time System" that sees all of the events in the processing of the communication as they happen. Now I can not claim to know the first thing about how Amazon is setup to run their business, these screenshots are taken from my own account with sensitive information blanked out of the images. But if you should feel the urge to put that SIM card, either directly or by tethering, to another use based on "Nobody will ever notice" - Think again. You can't tell exactly what is being monitored about that (or any) SIM card. Another note: The screenshots above are what "everyone" gets - clients who contract SIM cards by the millions can also contract for additional features. Last edited by knc1; 06-11-2012 at 05:00 PM. |
