Hello, ebook fanatic here :)

Hello, I'm new to this forum but not to ebooks. I read my first ebook from Amazon.com on my pc back in 2002 I think. I was quickly hooked and asked for a palm pilot for christmas. Joined peanutpress now ereader.com and spent a lot of money there. Moved from the palm to a Dell axim which was my favorite until it got wet a year or so ago. Finally this christmas I got my first android tablet. I love it except I cannot find the perfect ebook app. I want one that mimics my old palm/axim experience with a progress bar, dictionary lookup, and clock display for those late night when I can easily lose track of time and miss my sleep.

Hi ladyplf and welcome to MobileRead.

I started reading on an iPaq back in 2000 and was immediately hooked. Got a Sony 505 in early 08 and read a ton of books on it. Now have a Sony T1 to which I am addicted

Glad to have you here. I've wanted to get into e-books for a while, but finally took the plunge just recently.

The Kobo app has a progress bar, and dictionary lookup, but not a clock (though you can multitask out of the app to a clock elsewhere on your Android tablet). As Meatloaf famously sang, two out of three aint bad.

Thanks for the reply's. I have the Kobo app on my tablet but I never got around to using it. Right off the bat you have to create a new account before you can even test it out. And I don't intend to buy from the Kobo store so I didn't even bother with it; and I believe it only takes epubs.

I have a huge collection of .prc and .pdb books. Right now I'm using the Kindle app and Aldiko. I prefer the Aldiko a little more but again it takes epubs and Kindle can read my old .prc books. I guess I am a little too picky.

I would still be using my Axim if not for it getting wet and the battery dieing. Then I almost went for the Kindle but since I was going to upgrade to a modern device I figured it should be able to do more than ebooks. But in the end, I pretty much only read on the thing anyway.

I had to remind myself that you actually used a Palm device for e-reading, so you to you ePub actually seems like an interloper. To many (most?) of us, ePub seems like the white knight that's trying to bring a semblance of sanity to e-reading formats, but most of us came to e-reading later than you.

It was weird to see the ebook industry move on from the old formats to epubs, but change and progress are the name of the game today. I have calibre so I can convert most of my old ebooks except the drm ones anyway.

One good thing about the new popularity of ebooks is that now I can shop at Amazon or Fictionwise only for ebooks whereas back in the day I shopped at all kinds of little epublishers; and some of them were fly by night operations that would just close up shop and leave customers and authors hanging. I even had my credit card info stolen from one of those little epublishers once. (Didn't stop my ebook addiction though.)

Anyway with the entry of the Kindle my little secret passion that nobody understood is now mainstream which is a good thing. Ebook prices are going down thanks to Amazon and there are far more choices than ever before.
