The following statrment nas me scratching my head!!!

I replace it with ">" but when I run HTML Tidy, the ".&gt;" returns.

It makes my head itch

It's the rules of HTML. There are a few characters which have to be replaced with HTML entities.
> replace with &gt;
< replace with &lt;
& replace with &amp;

There may be others but I can't think of them off-hand.

That is forced You can't use ">" because that char is reserved for tags (<p>, <div>, etc.) If you want to write ">" as character, then neccesarily you'll need to use "&gt;"

I've had something similar happen to me, in Sigil, where an html entity has the beginning & replaced by &amp; (so that the entire entity gets spelled out, say &ampamp but it rarely happens and is easily fixed.

That's what happens when you paste an &amp; (or any html code) into Book View @Notjohn. Sigil is assuming that anything entered into Book View is to be displayed literally. So to actually render the literal text "&amp;" the html code would need to be &amp;amp;.
