eBooks in Different Languages Kindle4nt
Hello there!
I got the Kindle 4 for Xmas and it is MEGA! I was sceptical before but honestly now i'm getting on it! One thing i thought would be better is the availability of books in different languages. I am learning Brazilian Portuguese and Norwegian(True story!) and want to buy interesting books in those languages to help me learn. I was thinking of good kids books like Roald Dahl and Harry Potter. When I look on the kindle shop they are nowhere!! I spoke to a Spanish friend of mine that has the kindle and she can only really get books in English - that she said was a little annoying! So does anyone know if such content does actually exist? What are the best resources for them? If it requires something like coolreader does that mean that i need to Jailbreak my kindle first? Has anyone tried to do this and what have you all done. Any thoughts would be ace!! Cheers K* |

The Kindle is actually quite useful for users interested in learning foreign languages that use the Latin alphabet, because it comes with free monolingual dictionaries for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Portuguese, which are downloaded on demand when you look up a word in a non-English ebook (as long as it has the correct language metadata).
Since the Kindle format is based on the Mobipocket format, you can also install pretty much any Mobipocket dictionary by simply copying it to the document folder. As for foreign language books, you can find free foreign language public domain books all over the Internet. If you cannot find Kindle books, simply search for ePubs and open them with the PC Kindle Previewer, which will automatically convert them to the Kindle format. |

If you want to read Norwegian books you can get them from http://www.digitalbok.no/, however, as is most often the case once you go outside the US, Kindles aren't supported (because they aren't sold in those countries) so you need to educate yourself in the art of "format shifting". It is not that hard to do, but it is outside the scope of this site to teach you how to do it. But if you do a search here on "format shifting" you will find a lot of useful hints.
