How do I backup my kindle3?

If I want to backup my Kindle3, do I just need to copy all the folders and files that Windows sees to another partition, or do I need to install some hack to still keep the folders in my homepage, network settings, bookmarks, etc.

For your books, bookmarks, annotations, etc, just copy the "documents" folder. I don't believe there is a way to backup things like network settings.

Thanks, what about all the organizing I did creating folders and adding books to them on the home page? If I just copy all the files over to my hard drive, and restore the Kindle to the factory settings, and copy the files back to the Kindle, will I lose all my organizing?

If you turn on WiFi or 3G, your collections will be synched with Amazon's servers, but if you then reload your content, you can get back the actual collections, but you'll need to manually re-add the books to the collections.

In Windows Explorer, navigate to the Kindle. If Win 7 or Vista, click in the address bar to make it editable so it says something like F:/Kindle/. Type "system" so that it reads F:/Kindle/System and hit enter. You're now in the hidden system folder. The file you want from there is collections.json. Copy that to your computer's hard drive. It contains all your collections info.

If you have to restore your Kindle, first load all the books back onto it, then copy that file back into the system folder the same way you accessed it above, then restart the Kindle from the settings menu.

Ah, yes, that's true for the Kindle 3, which I now notice the original poster has. I have a Kindle Touch, where the collections file is not publicly visible.
