Buying an Iliad

Hi there,

I'm seriously thinking abiout getting an Iliad Bookreader. I'm about to start a PhD so being able to store and access all my research materials on one little gadget rather then the huge filing cabinet and not so ordered piles I have at the moment would be amazing and I like the idea of being able to make the odd note and access the internet...

So here's the but...

The price!..It is rather a lot of money for someone in my current state of finances, however I will be in New York in March and was thinking if I could pick one up while over there then, what with exchange rates being as they are (I'm in the UK), I would save a reasonable amount of money and hence reduce my financial guilt levels.

Does anyone know if there is possible and if so where, or is it only possible to buy online?

To tell the truth I will probably end up getting one either way, but I feel I should at least make some effort to make myself feel better about it.

Cheers,

The Iliad is produced in Europe (tax-wise) and paid in Euro's. With the strong Euro, the Dollar price will be a even higher.

Why don't you try to buy one second-hand? I did this a year ago and it is still the best gadget I have bought so far. Cost will be around 350-400 Euro (~230-270 GBP).

I don't know if you can get them in shops...that was what I was asking.

I was looking at the online prices and its 433 pounds on the uk site and $699 on the american site which is a pretty good saving at the moment. Thinking about it I should probably have looked to see if I could just buy it from the american site but i kinda assumed that I would need an american card and address...I'll check it out.

I've been looking about for second hand ones but I haven't seen any...if you know of anyone who wants to sell one then I would be happy to help out!

Even with shipping and customs you should come out ahead. If you order from the US try and have it shipped EMS. It's a bit more expensive but it's faster and there's a tracking number. I believe there's a guaranteed delivery date, too.

I ship a lot all over the world and know that it takes longer to get shipments into Great Britain from the United States.

But having it delivered to the UK could leave you liable to UK import duties/taxes and there goes your saving.

As of today GPB449 = US $915.76 which is a huge difference.

OK. This page seems to suggest that it would be liable to VAT only, and not duty (I was thinking of someone who got caught by VAT *and* duty on a camcorder). So, 699 plus 17.5% is 821. I'm not sure what the delivery charges would be, but I would hope it would be nothing close to another 100 USD so it does indeed look like there might be a saving to be made.

Warning: IANAL, IANACO, IDNWFHMG, and other indecipherable acronyms meaning I might have got this wrong.

I found two second hand Iliad devices for you. An older one from the Irex forum and another one from a well known Dutch online marketplace.

http://link.marktplaats.nl/122728055 (he aks 500 EUR, which is over the top IMO)

Well there is certainly lots of options!
Thanks everyone you've all been really helpful and lovely.

A reasonably priced 2nd hand one I think will be my prefered option...unfortunatly the ebay one given is sold but I shall keep an eye out.
I would rather wait a bit and get the reader that I really want then end up buying one that doesn't live up to my dreams...as it were...just because its cheaper.

So, New Years gift to myself coming up some time in the nearish future I think!
Yay!

Purchase it in advance online at http://www.ereaderoutfitters.com/
Have them ship it to your hotel and hold it for you (assuming you are staying at a reputable hotel)
