Future Firmware Request
Thanks to the developers at Sony for the last Firmware update(I think that was about a month ago 1.0.0.3.11140). It fixed the page turning/touch screen issue and took care of a problem with DRM ebooks from Thalia.de.
I still have a couple things I'd like fixed though. - Italics and bold script: When I change the font, often these are lost. While it is possible to get them back by changing the font-size back and forth a few times, I still need to FIND the first instance of modified script to see if it worked. Plus, after using the homescreen the italics are gone again. - Justification: I prefer left justified text and many ebooks are fully justified. I'll bet for half the people the opposite is true. - Margins: If you're lucky, a book has none or at least equal ones on all four sides. In the latter case the zoom works, but if you have margins on the sides you're outta luck. I do realize that these first three issues can be solved with calibre. Since my calibre setup(with plugins) atomatically removes any restrictions, I can't say for sure if this is possible with DRM'ed ebooks. - Searching: This I consider most important. The present implementation is useless! When, for example, I've finally found the first instance of a character's name (by hitting the left arrow perhaps a dozen times) I need to hit the right arrow EXACTLY the same number of times to get back to where I was when I started the search. If I forgot to count, remember the page-nr or, god forbid, touch the back button, I'm lost. That's just total BS! Forget the dumb left/right arrows. A good search function would have "first", "previous", "next" and "back" buttons. |

Well, I'd like them to improve the fonts, they are not good! I don't know if it's a matter of the book (wich I doubt, because I've seen it in 2 different books) but they are not crisp at all. Luckily, I have cool reader, so I can read with other fonts, but doing so I lose access to a lot of the device's characteristics and have to deal or have to deal with the ugly -I love the program funcionality, but I think it's ugly, sorry- interface.
Anyways, I've heard Sony is not the one of the upgradder kind, so... |

I actually didn't order a Kobo earlier in the summer because it didn't have searching. Then I waited ages for the T1 after pre-ordering and what did I get: perfectly useless searching! The real joke is that a few weeks after I finally got my T1 the Kobo became available in Germany with pretty well implemented searching. It gives you a list of the instances of what you're searching for. |

A list of search results... that would certainly be nice!

While they are at it, it would be nice to actually have true italics - not just slanted text.

Italics are nice, but when I am reading a book I find I don't care that much.
I would like it to actually delete the book when you tell it to. No idea what that is all about, as sometimes it will and sometimes it won't. Having to delete the book several times is annoying though. Then I often get reader application shutting down, random restarts, poor battery life with no SD card and WiFi turned off. Oh well, at least when the PRS-T1 gets really painful I have a PRS-600 and PRS-350 to comfort me. If only one could get the PRS-600 functionality on a Pearl screen. Helen |

Seems like a good place to mention a couple bugs I hope get fixed. When loading my books onto the T1, I use an SD exclusively, and I've found these issues.
When I create a bookmark, the bookmark doesn't appear in the Notes menu, making it so I can never navigate to it. Also, when I create a new Collection on the SD card from within the device, the Collection doesn't create entries that are functional. Both these functions work properly with books stored in internal memory. I've reported these bugs to Sony, but I don't know how widely they've been reported, so who knows if they'll actually get fixed? |

For a dedicated e-reader, the font issue is disappointing. I expect, just like in a book, sharp clear fonts, justified, and true italics. I certainly like the ability to increase font size, but expect that they be displayed properly.

Jump over to this read in the Sony Dev forum - Morkl has done some fabulous work modding the original reader app, including fixing the bold/italic problem when selecting alternate fonts and being able to change fonts.
You'll need to wade through the thread to pick up the latest version (post #39 has the current version), and it's probably not what you'd call polished yet (he's only been at it a couple of days and you'll need to hand-edit some xml files to take advantage of all his changes) but he's made great progress so far. You'll need to install the mod (which isn't too difficult) so this won't be for everyone though. Cheers, Simon. |

Just an extra bit of info for anyone who's considering using Morkl's excellent fixed & improved Sony reader app...
It's not essential to have rooted your T1 to apply the fix. Morkl has kindly included a second update method for those of us who have been a bit too nervous to root the device so far. It's as simple as connecting the T1 to your PC and double-clicking a Windows .bat file, then following a couple of on-screen instructions. |
