Can't convert after editing Name/Author

I have a few files where someone has been silly and the Title is something like "Converted using..." and then the Author field is actually the book's title.

If I fix the 2 fields, I cannot convert the file to a different format - "no suitable source format was found."

What IS the source format?

Varied - EPUB, PDF amongs others. All renamed files failed conversion, regardless of format. I solved the problem by editing the file names before importing into Calibre.
