Amazon Kindle 4 on PDFs?
Hey guys, basically i need an ebook reader to read pdfs since most of my materials are in the pdf format. I've toyed with kindle 3 / 2 before and the pdf display didn't impress me. Instead it was a huge pita. I tried converting them , and as usual with every conversion, there are some details which are lost / made worse than original.
What about kindle 4? |

The Kindle 4 (Non Touch) won't deal any better with PDFs than any other 6" Reader. The Touch Version still has no option to read in landscape mode last I heard, so that's even worse.
If you really want to read PDFs that don't convert well to epub/mobi you either need one of the big e-ink reader (9,7"), Pocketbook 903/912 Boox M92, Kindle DX or the new Jetbook Color come to mind, or a 7" or 10" tablet. Last edited by Abtacha; 02-07-2012 at 04:04 AM. |

My understanding is that the Sony is still the best for PDF's. None of the 6 inch readers are particularly great for PDFs. You might want to look at one of the larger e-readers or a tablet.

I strongly recommend a tablet for reading pfs. I have a Kindle and a Sony T1 and none of them deal well with pdfs (well enough for my academic use, which means reading and annotating a large amount of pdfs). I ended up getting an iPad for that purpose.
I have some threads on the topic that you can take a look at: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=156702 https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=156791 |

Do you want a monochrome eInk reader or is a color e-reader going to suit?
An alternative, although I've not yet tried it (waiting for my Nook Simple Touch to arrive) is to get a Nook Simple Touch or Nook Color, root it, and install an Android PDF reader such as ezPDF or Nook PDF. I've not confirmed how well these behave on eInk, but I read a few comments here and there indicating it's a great improvement for viewing PDFs on the Nook. Look into it, and it might turn up some interesting options. Jonathan |

Abtacha has suggested a JetBook color, which looks like a great device. However, it's retail price in the US is set to $500. For that much, I think I'd be inclined to get a nice Tablet from Acer or Asus. For the same price, or less, one gets a lot more for the money. Perhaps the disadvantage is that a tablet will chew threw the battery much quicker than an eInk device. So you'd have to take that into consideration.

For that price you can get an IPad or a Samsung Galaxy

Thank you all so much for your input. I guess, i should lay low on my desire to obtain the ebook reader since most of my materials are in pdfs. I'll continue reading on my dell streak then.

I'm going for the rooted Nook Simple Touch option
Well, I'll be going for the Nook Simple Touch option... rooted, with a PDF reader installed. Failing that, I'll be using Calibre, plus some scripts and regex to get rid of headers and footers. Will let you know how it goes, if I remember to post back on here in a month or two.
