HP Is Reviving The $99 TouchPad Firesale! Refurb Models To Hit HP’s Ebay Store On 12/11

Get your clicking fingers ready! These boys are going to go fast.

Starting Sunday, December 11th at 6:00 p.m. Central time, 16GB and 32GB Touchpads will be available on HP’s ebay store. A $79 accessory bundle will also be available, which includes a case, charging dock and wireless keyboard. Look for them in the laptop section. As you would expect, there are some caveats with this deal with the main disappointment being these are refurbished TouchPads rather than the brand new models sold during the first firesale.

The refurbished 16GB and 32GB models will be available in an unannounced quantity. Sales will be limited to just two SKUs per ebay member and PayPal must be used to complete the transaction. All sales are final and the product only comes with a 90-day warranty. HP wants these things gone.

Too many restrictions for this sale in my opinion: all sales final, 90-day warranty, eBay, and PayPal are all non-starters for me. Glad I got one during the August blowout.

I am going to get one to have on the coffee table... and to use it in places where I dont want to take my iPad because it might break

Everyone that gets one should hang out at forums.precentral.net and get familiar with the various configuration and other customizing options.

A lot of pundits slammed the touchpad as having a great OS on substandard hardware when the opposite is true. The touchpad has above average speed and RAM, but it is severely hobbled by its out of the box configuration.

In particular, it is set to log huge amounts of usage and other information and to sent the log files to HP over the internet. The logging makes the touchpad severely laggy and runs the battery down as does all the logging wifi traffic.

The ripply effect from screen touches has a similar effect on lagginess and battery life. The are more as well.

Not all the tweaks at forums.precentral.net may be your cup of tea, but I urge at least killing the logging and please consider canning the ripple effect. It feels like a different machine and my battery life more than quadrupled.

My major disappointment is that the keyboard has 9 different emoticons, but no Escape, and Control requires holding down the "t" key until a menu pops up, then selecting a symbol for Control, and finally pressing whatever control character you want.

Oh, yeah, the wireless charging dock is way cool, but it does make the TP CPU hot, so I just use it for top-ups rather than full charge, or let it cool down every once in a while during charge.

Also, it will charge much quicker if you dim the display or switch the display off. When it is on the charging dock, it insists on turning the display on unless you click the power button a couple of times.

We have both an iPad and TouchPad. The HP is a competent machine that works quite well out of the box. Thanks for the link to precentral. It will be fun to experiment with some different settings. While I have no need for a second one I am very glad we picked one up at the first fire sale. I also recommend the HP case. It fits very well and does not add too much bulk.

So what problems can a refurbished device face as compared to new one?

refurb usually just means it has come back for some reason and has been checked/repaired to factory specs.

Could be a unit that didn't function, could be a unit that was the wrong color or some other minor reason. At any rate the 90 warr. should show up any problems. I don't think I've had anything electronic go bad till its life expectancy was reached if it made it through the 90 day warr. Not to say others haven't had serious trouble just out of warranty, but the normal is refurbs are okay.

Bought a refurb home theatre system and it is two years old still running fine.

Why the glumness about PayPal?
My only problem has been that it is hard to find how to change your password. All payments has worked just fine. I'm curious since I use it for a lot of international payments.

Oh, and I would have loved to buy a TP if they shipped to Sweden.

HP’s $99 TouchPad to return again in HP eBay store

The HP TouchPad flew off shelves when the company slashed the base price of the tablet from $400 to $99. The company promised that there would be a final run of the tablet, but TechCrunch is reporting that the company will be selling its 16GB and 32 GB models at firesale prices on its eBay store this Sunday. The sale is set to start at 7 p.m. Eastern time, 6 p.m., Central.

The models will be refurbished — not new — the report said. According to what appears to be a leaked employee memo, the company planned to let its workers have first crack at the eBay sale by delaying their announcement of the auction.

The tablets will reportedly be listed under the “laptops” section of the store and will be selling for $99 and $149, respectively. The company is limiting sales to two tablets per person, and purchases can only be made via PayPal. The refurbished tablets come with a 90-day limited warranty, and all sales are final.
