Organizing, deleted, read, how on a Nook Tablet?

My wife and I both have Nook Color readers that have been rooted.

I keep track of my books on the computer (not the tablet), in a Word file of my authors, with books listed. It enables me to run through the list of authors, see what I've read, check for new releases, and track series.

My wife keeps her books on her Nook, and often has trouble remembering what she's read, not read, whether she's reading a series in order, what she wants to read next, etc... She doesn't keep any organizer on the PC.

Is there an app or something that'll run on the Nook Color/Tablet that would let her keep track of her reading, what's next, delete stuff she's read, and so on? I use Calibre on the PC, but it doesn't appear to run on the Nook. Is there something else? How do those of you with hundreds or thousands of books on your tablets keep track of what you've read, what's next, where you are in series, what authors you want to find more books from, etc?

Lot's of people suggest creating shelves such as Unread, Reading, and Read. That way you know which books are which.

Can you explain "shelves"? Is this something in the book reader or am I going to have to teach her how to get out to Android, and copy or delete files? Is there a calibre or some other "organizer" that's available on the tablet? 'Cause in calibre it's easy to label books in a series so I know what to read next. That's her other problem - what's the next book in order...
