KDP freebie backlist round-up for 2012-01-15
Today's KDP Select exclusive-or-else slushpile trawl has nothing Relevant To My Interests, although the romance and possibly the thriller readers will probably be happy. And it looks like the Christian fiction folks get something, too.
Without further ado: This Jennifer Stevenson may or may not be the same as the homonymous chick-lit comedic romantic urban fantasy writer who's a member of the Book View Cafe author consortium and print-published by Random House. However, one of the "three sexy short stories" blurbs does say "Jewish sex magic", so it might well be her: Ear Candy Barbara Samuel is apparently a RITA award-finalist author, and has stories included in Bell Bridge Books and Signet anthologies. She offers a contemporary romance which seems to have been originally written under the pseudonym Ruth Wind: Jezebel's Blues Judy Powell offers a 2005 Lyons paperback-published contemporary romance: Hot Summer Lisa Renee Jones offers the 1st in her originally Ellora's Cave-published Underground Guardians paranormal romance series which she is emphatic about making clear contains hot super soldiers, and says inspired her currently Sourcebooks-published Legend of Michael series: Protector The 1st book in said Legend of Michael series, Sin and Satisfaction, can be had for $1.99 in most outlets as one of Sourcebooks' introductory discount prices, and is cheapest at Kobo using this weekend's 30% off coupon. St. Martin's Press-published Cheyenne McCray also writes erotica under her Jaymie Holland penname and accordingly offers: Taboo Desires: 3 Sexy Tales of Lust and Passion Dawn DeAnna Wilson, who had a YA novel published in 2001 and reviewed by Publisher's Weekly and Booklist, offers a contemporary romance: Leaving the Comfort Cafe Linda Hall, a Canadian writer whose paperback listings include Harlequin's Steeple Hill Christian romance paperbacks, offers an inspirational-looking mystery suspense in the Coast of Maine series: Katheryn's Secrets Grant McKenzie is a newbie Scottish-born Canadian writer who has been recently published by Bantam Transworld in the UK and Penguin in Canada. He offers an e-book exclusive revenge thriller which he claims to be too controversial for mainstream publishers: K.A.R.M.A. Paul Bishop has been print-published by Tor, among others, since at least the mid-90s. He offers a police procedural mystery/thriller, part of the Walker/Tamino LAPD series: Hot Pursuit Small press published fellow MR member author Libby Fischer Hellman offers a collection of short stories: Nice Girl Does Noir Vol. 2 Still free: Vol. 1 David Toussaint is a columnist theatre critic for EDGE, previously employed by some Conde Nast magazines, who's also the author of the Ballantine-published Gay and Lesbian Weddings: Planning the Perfect Same-Sex Ceremony. That does not happen to be the free book he offers, which instead is a memoir: Toussaint! If you have or know young kids with scientific ambitions, perhaps you might want to pick up this illustrated children's book for them: Maybe I'll Be A Marine Biologist When I Grow Up This guy apparently tried to build and fly his own replica Spitfire. I am including his book because I like aviation and historical recreationism and it does look interesting: Birth of a Spitfire This one, frankly, I am including for the lulz, because behind that staid gold-embossed plain green cover lurks a comedy goldmine: The Scottish Buddhist Cookbook I don't know what recreational pharmaceuticals this author may be on, but clearly they've got a direct line to the good supply. And that's everyone whose name/publisher was recognizable or turned out to have decent verifiable credentials on their author page. Save for those last three. Happy reading, should you find something you think you might like. Last edited by ATDrake; 01-15-2012 at 01:10 PM. Reason: Misspelt author's name. Though if it really had an n in place of the h, it would make his self-google searches a lot easier. |

Looks like this guy has published some short fiction (plus about 70 recorded songs, toured with his bands, etc):

That looks like a thoroughly cracktastic example of "write what you know". Getting it for the lulz, thanks.

Oh wait, it does look like the KDP slushpile does have something Relevant To My Interests, even though it decided to scurry away and hide from my regular checking sources:
The Pleasure Tube, by Robert Onopa, is old-school space-station sci-fi which is older than I am. He preserves it in all its pulpy-covered glory and it's got praise by Algis Budrys, among others. Hat tip to arcadata for finding and featuring this on her Randomize ME blog, and if you're interested in picking up some 1st of series HarperCollins Voyager sf/fantasy/paranormal bargains, they're running a promo on some of them between 99 cents to $1.99, prices mostly good until the end of January, and you can find arcadata's affiliate buy-links for the titles starting in this post in her thread here. Also, Laura Resnick's Tor-published epic fantasy 1st in Silerian trilogy is now free again if you missed it earlier: In Legend Born Robert E. Keller (ISFDB entry) has had a handful of stories printed in minor outlets and offers a free short story collection: Fantasy Stories -- Volume II Previously-featured award-nominee mystery/suspense writer Theresa Weir teams up with indie-author-who-got-her-cover-plagiarized-by-a-major-publisher-which-happens-to-be-HarperCollins-no-surprises-there L.K. Rigel to offer the 1st in said plagiarized-cover Apocalypto series: Space Junque. Rigel also offers another freebie solo-written fantasy: Give Me - A Tale of Wyrd and Fae (Tethers 1) And now I really think that's everything, since the netbook is eating all my Firefox windows and I'll probably have to do some sort of reboot to clear up the problem. I don't have these problems on the Mac. Different Firefox problems, yes, but not this particular annoying one. |

Carol Grace's Cinderella in Overalls is currently free! If you like old Harlequins I would grab it.
